This is a seasonal position (June 7, 2026-August 1, 2026).

The Health Services Specialist is responsible for overseeing the health, safety, and wellness of all Army Lake Camp participants. This role includes responding to medical emergencies, managing and maintaining accurate medical records for campers and staff, and ensuring compliance with health and cleanliness standards throughout camp.

About the role:

  • Health Center Operations
    • Manage the Health Center daily
    • Obtain necessary supplies, checking current inventory to ensure adequate stock.
    • Prepare and maintain all first aid kits and bloodborne pathogen kits, ensuring proper placement throughout camp (vehicles, cabins, offices, kitchen, maintenance, activity areas, etc.).
    • Develop and maintain a checklist for kit usage, including incident report forms.
    • Prepare and distribute lockboxes for staff to securely store medications during camp.
    • Prepare and append standing medical orders in consultation with a licensed physician; ensure orders are confirmed in writing and followed consistently.
    • Maintain the Health Center, medical equipment, and inventory; submit work requests to the Camp Director as needed.
  • Staff and Camper Support
    • Conduct Health and Safety orientation for staff in collaboration with the Camp Director.
    • Get to know other staff members and understand their general responsibilities.
    • Guide and participate in camper health screenings on registration day.
    • Distribute confidential reports to staff regarding campers' medical conditions that may affect participation (e.g., asthma, epilepsy).
    • Advise and assist program staff and campers on health and health education matters.
  • Medical Oversight and Recordkeeping
    • Hold regular office hours and arrange for 24-hour emergency coverage, maintaining communication with the main office.
    • Distribute medications at meals and other designated times as directed by prescribing physicians.
    • Maintain all health-related records, including daily logs, medical forms, incident reports, insurance forms, and insurance records.
    • Keep a bound Health Center book recording date, participant name, reason for visit, treatment, medications, and time administered.
    • Submit health records to the Camp Director at the end of staff orientation week and at the end of each camp session.
  • Emergency Response and Communication
    • Respond to medical emergencies promptly.
    • Arrange visits to other medical facilities as needed, including pre-arranged clinics, hospitals, and dental care.
    • Notify Camp Director promptly in the case of head injuries, seizures, fever, vomiting, or any situation requiring medical attention beyond camp staff capabilities.
    • Advise the Camp Director on all health matters communicated to state health inspectors.
  • Camp Health & Safety Oversight
    • Periodically observe all areas of camp for health and safety concerns, report deficiencies to the Camp Director.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the Health Center and living quarters.
    • Collect and restock all cabin first aid kits at the end of the season.
    • Work with the Camp Director to ensure compliance with all relevant Federal, State, and local rules and regulations, including American Camping Association (ACA) standards for non-program areas.
    • Maintain a servant's attitude, functioning as an integral member of the camp team.

Education, Experience & Skills Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • A heart for ministry and desire to serve in a Christian environment.
    • Current (or obtain before campers arrive) American Red Cross or American Heart Association basic CPR and AED.
  • Must have taken (or obtain before campers arrive) Medication Administration Principles - Wisconsin department of public instruction online course.
    • Must have (or obtain before campers arrive) one of the following:
      • Current physician licensed in Wisconsin
      • Registered Nurse licensed in Wisconsin
      • Physician Assistant licensed in Wisconsin
      • National athletic trainers' association certified trainer
      • Emergency Medical services practitioner
      • American Red Cross responding to emergencies course or equivalent.
      • Wilderness First Aid Course
      • Or any equivalent certifications
    • Must have taken (or obtain before campers arrive) anaphylaxis training program
    • Valid Wisconsin Driver's license, with clearance to drive from The Salvation Army's insurance carrier.
    • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
    • Must reside on campgrounds for the duration of employment.
    • Demonstrates initiative, dependability, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Exhibits strong attention to detail, a positive attitude, and flexibility in adapting to changing priorities.
    • Supports and upholds the mission, philosophy, and objectives of The Salvation Army and Army Lake Camp.
    • Displays a genuine passion for ministry and for serving and mentoring youth in a Christ-centered environment.
