Mental Health Respite Mission: Through professionalism, nurturance, and empowerment MHR will provide supportive services with the purpose of leading participants in personal growth and improving life skills for transitioning to the least restrictive level of care within the community environment.

 

Summary/Primary Purpose:  Provide supervision and management of all Behavior Health Support Specialists, oversight of floor operations for Mental Health Respite to include oversight of staff training, policies and procedures of program are followed, management of program nutritional needs and operational needs and additional duties to support program management.  Mental Health Respite provides a safe, protected, supervised residential environment on a short-term basis.  The intent of the service is to support individuals by providing linkages to needed behavioral health services and assist in transition back into the community.    

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support, assist, and direct program staff in goal directed interactions with program participants to include modeling boundaries and problem solving for participants and staff.
  • This role will ensure staff compliance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Responsible to meet at least monthly with staff to review staff progress in the program and provide constructive performance feedback, and opportunities to improve staff skills.
  • Assist staff with clients in crisis and staff floor coverage when needed and complete monthly schedule to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Monitor MHR program operations to ensure program policies and procedures and emergency procedures are followed by program participants and staff.
  • Assess program participants and implement appropriate interventions to prevent and de-escalate crisis situations utilizing crisis prevention techniques (CPI).
  • Determine the need for urgent psychiatric care, detoxification, and/or medical attention in crisis situations and assist with coordinating transportation of program participant to appropriate care/assessment setting.
  • Oversee and/or implement after hours unscheduled discharges as needed.
  • Provides assistance and direction to program staff in the implementation of appropriate crisis procedures and interactions. Ensure that crisis care is provided in the least restrictive manner possible.
  • Assess floor/unit operations and conduct inspections of residential programs to ensure safety of program participants and staff.
  • Participate in rotation of on-call responsibilities providing coverage as needed.
  • Purchase supplies to meet unit needs.
  • Perform medication observation and documentation.
  • Communicate pertinent information to MHR Program Director, Program Manager, Community Outreach Coordinator, other MHR staff, case workers, therapists, psychiatrists, hospitals, police, and client emergency contacts.
  • Provide training for BHSS staff and complete on documentation of incident reports, medical observation reports and participant interactions.
  • Monitor and communicate building and floor needs with supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in performance and quality improvement program, as required.
  • This position will be Tuesday 10am-5pm, and Wednesday through Saturday from 3 PM- 11:00 PM and will be a 40 hour a week exempt position, with on-call hours on a rotating basis and may be required to evenings, weekends, overnights and holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: Behavioral Health Support Specialists. 

 

Education and/or Experience: Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a human services-related field, or active enrollment in an accredited human services-related degree program with documented progress toward completion (e.g., currently enrolled and successfully completing coursework toward an associate, bachelor's, or higher degree), and three years of experience in a behavioral health acute care, residential, or crisis stabilization setting utilizing crisis de-escalation techniques. A bachelor's degree is preferred. Two to three years of supervisory experience is preferred.

 

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ability to comply with ethics and professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.
  • Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, attention to detail and filing.
  • Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Good communication skills both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

 

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks.  Must possess a valid driver’s license from the state in which you reside.  Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.  Must consistently apply program rules and regulations and follow program policies and procedures as well as emergency procedures. 

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Obtain Medication Aid , CPR/First aid, and  CPI certification within the first 90 days of  employment.

Working Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but will vary from quiet to loud.
