Job Description:

As the Life Skills Development Coordinator, you will be responsible for developing, conducting, and overseeing educational and vocational opportunities for clients including work readiness, life skills and continuing adult education. Take the lead in educational/professional/leadership development initiatives focusing on the educational and academic success of client and potential opportunity for staff. Promote and plan the implementation of curriculum, training, and professional development initiatives for clinical programs. Develop and I.E.P (Individual Education Plan) for clients as needed. Ensure the ongoing quality improvement in the delivery of services. Register and administer pre and post-test adult literacy and documents progress; provide educational support material and recommend community education related programs; make referrals to outside agencies. Develop relationships with employment centers such as WorkOneIndy. The role of the Life Skills Development Coordinator is essential to the ministerial programming efforts of The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center and supports all aspects of our clinical services. The Life Skills Development Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:

  • Develops and oversees life skills and other educational opportunities for clients such as interviewing skills, nutrition, wellness, family life and relationships, etc.
  • Develop IEPs for clients to address their educational needs for but not limited to; GED preparation, enrollment of classes for high school and college, technical and non-technical testing, and CEU’s
  • Provide classes for financial restoration, stress management utilizing tools such as Right Now Media, Resume Builder, etc.
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to scheduling, outreach, assessment and testing, staff/volunteer training, and other instruction
  • Attend meetings, conferences, seminars, and provide transportation to job fairs for clients as needed, teleconferences to remain knowledgeable on educational changes and trends
  • Develops learning opportunities and conducts educational classes to support clinical programming
  • Oversees databases for evaluation and tracking purposes
  • Lead efforts in grants, scholarships, and other funding opportunities for educational assisting for clients
  • Interpret and create work plans; convert needs into comprehensive educational programs
  • Assists in the completion of forms needed for collaborative efforts with other agencies
  • Assists in developing relationships with outside agencies, public relation efforts, funding campaigns and collaborative opportunities
  • Generates reports for Leadership and funding organizations
  • Assists in enrolling clients in certain training episodes for ongoing skill development
  • Provide educational networking opportunities internally/externally with other outside agencies for HLC clients
  • Assists staff in audio/visual presentations throughout departments
  • Monitors programming equipment-supplies, place supply orders as needed
  • Services as the main contact for outside volunteers and groups who are providing educational programming
  • Be sensitive to cultural, ethnic, and gender orientation differences
  • Conducts 1:1 with clients to help meet educational and vocational needs such as resume writing, interview skills, college prep, admissions, etc.
  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education or social work, master’s degree preferred.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Leading educational groups, interviewing and interacting with people comfortably. Experience in human services strongly preferred. Evidence of scholarly activity, commitment to research, and professional development. Ability to research and analyze documents

Certifications: Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver’s qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
  • Ability to meet a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • If in recovery, must demonstrate at least two years of sobriety with evidence of emotional and social stability

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting, pulling, and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds
  • May require bending, squatting, walking.
  • May require standing for extended

Travel: Position may require occasional travel for training.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a typical office, which may require some weekend and evening work
