Certified Lifeguard - The Salvation Army Kroc Center

Starting Pay: $15.00

  • We’re pleased to offer a $1,200 sign-on bonus for newly hired Lifeguards, paid in three installments at 3, 6, and 12 months of continuous employment. To qualify, candidates must obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification within 90 days of hire, maintain an average of at least 5 hours per week, and remain in good standing with satisfactory attendance and policy compliance. Rehires who have worked as a Lifeguard at the South Bend Kroc Center within the past 12 months are not eligible.

Job Objective: 

As a Lifeguard you will monitor activities, observe and provide assistance to swimmers, prevent accidents, protect life and enforce regulations as well as control access to pools, family locker rooms, and lockers. All this is done while ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.    

What You Will Do:  

• Must be able to analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action; maintain constant observation of an assigned area to identify any signs of danger. 

• Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning. 

• Provide first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR when necessary. 

• Inspect and maintain cleanliness of swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, trash cans, cleaning equipment, aquatic equipment storage areas, and other areas as assigned. 

• Follow and enforce the equipment checkout program. Report defects, necessary repairs, etc.  

• See that all equipment assigned to the aquatic facilities is maintained and properly inventoried on a regular basis. 

• Other tasks as assigned by leadership 

Minimum Qualifications:  The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. 

Education: Must be at least 16 years of age 

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed if 18 years of age. Findings may disqualify an individual for this position 

Certifications:  

• American Red Cross CPR and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. AED certification is highly desirable. 

• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required or ability to receive within six months. 

• American Red Cross Oxygen Administration certification highly desirable. 

• Must complete Safe from Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.  

Skills/Abilities:   

• Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele 

• Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems 

• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Ability to speak Spanish desired.   

• Must be able to work varied shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and split shifts.

• Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity

Working Conditions: Work is performed in the Aquatics department. Must be able to work weekdays, weekends and holidays as needed; hours of operation may vary.
