Summary/Primary Purpose: The Night Lead provides direct care and shift leadership for adults experiencing mental health, substance use challenges, and homelessness. This role balances participant support with directing shift operations, ensuring services are delivered with empathy, dignity, and respect. Responsibilities include promoting skill development, assisting with daily living activities, supporting therapeutic and social programming, and maintaining a safe, structured environment. The Lead delivers timely interventions, and coordinates care through communication, documentation, medication administration, and meal preparation. As a shift lead, this position guides staff workflow and participant care while modeling professionalism, trauma-informed practice, and recovery-oriented philosophy, without supervisory responsibilities such as discipline or timecard approval.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day care in a safe environment that supports participants’ needs, well-being, and skill acquisition.
  • Support participants in building daily living skills and assist with planning and engaging in group, social, and recreational activities.
  • Monitor for warning signs of crisis and provide immediate intervention when necessary to ensure participant safety.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation.
  • Maintain open, professional communication and relationships with participants, coworkers, and external supports to coordinate care and ensure program consistency.
  • Conduct hourly checks of the unit and participants’ whereabouts, assess participant well-being, and document findings to ensure ongoing safety.
  • Prepare and monitor meals for participants. This may be heating prepared food or cooking from ingredients in coordination with the posted menu. 
  • Observe medications being taken by participants and complete appropriate documentation.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Provide on call coverage as needed to include coordinated efforts to fill open shifts available schedule in accordance with unit staffing ratios per regulations.
  • Driving is an essential function of the position.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

 

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One to two years related experience preferred. 

 

 

 

Qualifications:  The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

  • Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • The ability to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.
  • Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, attention to detail and filing.           
  • Good communication skills both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

 

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

 

On-Call Requirement: Staff hired will be responsible for on call supervisor coverage for 1 week (Tuesday 10am-Tuesday 10am) on a monthly rotation.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations and Training:

  • Within 90 days of hire, must successfully complete Safe from Harm training as established by The Salvation Army; Hourly Rounds Training and attain Medication Aide Certification.
  • Within six (6) months of employment must attain CPR/First Aid Certification and keep certification and update when required.
  • Complete 12 hours of intensive on-going training per year based on program/participant population need such as Emergency Protective Custody training (EPC), Board of Mental Health (BOMH), Behavioral Health Diagnosis, symptomology and interventions annually.

Working Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but will range from quiet to loud.
