Executive Director

Ross Ragland Theater

Klamath Falls, OR

Salary Range: $50,000 – $65,000 (Commensurate with Experience)

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrative and artistic officer of the theater, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. The ED is responsible for the overall operational health of the organization, including fiscal management, fundraising, staff supervision, and seasonal programming. The successful candidate will be a disciplined manager who can balance the creative mission of a performing arts center with the rigorous administrative demands of a non-profit business.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Management & Fundraising (Primary Focus)

  • Grant Writing: Lead the identification, application, and reporting processes for corporate, foundation, and government grants (critical to 40% of operating budget).
  • Donor Relations: Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors and local sponsors to ensure diversified revenue streams.
  • Fiscal Oversight: Develop and manage the annual budget; monitor cash flow, P&L statements, and vendor contracts in coordination with the bookkeeper and Board Treasurer.
  • Revenue Growth: Implement strategies to increase ticket sales and facility rental income.

2. Operations & Staff Leadership

  • Personnel Management: Recruit, supervise, and conduct performance evaluations for all employed staff and contractors.
  • Administrative Oversight: Manage day-to-day theater operations, including vendor negotiations, insurance renewals, and facility maintenance schedules.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Work closely with the Guild and volunteer organizations to ensure successful production support and community integration.

3. Programming & Production Management

  • Season Planning: Source, book, and schedule a diverse season of 6-9 in-house productions, touring acts, and community events.
  • Contract Negotiation: Act as the primary point of contact for artist contracts, rights/licensing agencies, and technical riders.
  • Project Oversight: Ensure the technical and creative execution of shows stays within budget and on schedule.
  • Note: While the ED provides vision, the primary focus is on management; active directing or performing is a secondary priority to administrative duties.

4. Community Relations & Advocacy

  • Public Relations: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the theater in the community and media.
  • Marketing Strategy: Oversee the development of marketing campaigns, social media presence, and brand imagery.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Director, Associate Director, or high-level Manager of a performing arts theater or similar non-profit arts organization.
  • Financial Literacy: Demonstrated experience overseeing budgets, managing P&L statements, and handling complex vendor contracts.
  • Fundraising Track Record: Proven success in grant writing and individual donor cultivation.
  • Supervisory Experience: At least two years of experience managing staff, including hiring and conducting formal performance reviews.
  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Arts Administration, Business Administration, Non-Profit Management, or a related field is preferred but not required.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • A collaborative leader who values the input of staff and volunteers.
  • Exceptional "soft skills" and emotional intelligence; able to navigate community history with diplomacy.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple moving parts without losing sight of the bottom line.
  • Commitment to the theater’s role as a vital cultural hub in the region.
