York, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 3/29/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/27/2026
Organization Overview

The Laboratory of Genetics, headed by Michael W. Young, studies 24-hour circadian clocks, which time the recurring, daily activities observed in most organisms. These cellular clocks are active in most animal tissues and establish daily rhythms in physiology and behavior. The lab's findings have implications for sleep and mood disorders as well as for dysfunctions related to the timing of gene activities underlying visual functions, locomotion, metabolism, immunity, learning, and memory.

Overview

The Research Assistant will work closely with other members of the laboratory on projects exploring the physiological importance of circadian rhythms, sleep, and aging in Drosophila at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels. They will assist in fly husbandry, tissue dissections, and behavioral analyses, as well as DNA/RNA-seq analysis and confocal imaging. They will produce and analyze data, think critically, get exposure to primary literature, and communicate their research findings.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with other lab members to support ongoing research projects
  • Conduct fly husbandry, including routine care, transfers, stock maintenance and organization of fly cultures
  • Assist with experimental setup, data collection, analysis and presentation of research findings
  • Maintain lab equipment and research supplies, including routine upkeep, ordering, pickup and distribution
  • Perform related duties and responsiblities as needed to support efficient laboratory operations

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field
  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience working with Drosophila
  • Familiarity with basic wet-lab techniques (e.g. pipetting, sterile technique)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in molecular biology techniques
  • Basic coding or data analysis experience (e.g., Python, R)
