Organization Overview
The Rockefeller University provides a variety of housing accommodations to support the University's scientific needs. Apartments and dormitories are available to full-time faculty and students, and hotel accommodations are available for faculty and guests of the Rockefeller community. The Housing Department provides a safe, secure, and affordable residence conveniently located near the campus. Most of the University's apartments are located in full-service apartment buildings, with door staff and a variety of amenities. A few smaller apartment buildings are located within a short walking distance from campus. Dormitories and guest accommodations are located on the main campus. The Rockefeller campus is located on the Upper East Side, one of New York's most desirable residential neighborhoods. The 45-person housing staff consists of a group of mechanics, porters, housekeepers, and doorpersons, a superintendent for each building, and an office staff to address administrative needs.
Overview
The Porter is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of assigned residential buildings. This includes cleaning public, semi-public, and common areas; preparing and cleaning vacant apartments; and supporting building operations through furniture and appliance moves, garbage removal, and snow removal. The Porter will also operate building equipment such as compactors, floor-stripping and buffing machines, and carpet extractors. This role requires flexibility to respond to emergencies (e.g., flooding) and to work extended hours when needed. Duties may be modified by management as required.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Clean and maintain public, semi-public, and common areas of the building, including hallways, stairwells, lobbies, and restrooms
- Clean and prepare vacant apartments to ensure readiness for occupancy
- Collect and remove garbage and recycling; operate trash compactors safely and efficiently
- Perform snow removal duties, including clearing walkways, entrances, and other designated areas as needed
- Assist with moving furniture, appliances, and other equipment throughout the facility.
- Operate cleaning and floor-care equipment, including stripping and buffing machines and carpet extractors.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g., flooding, spills) and assist with cleanup efforts as directed
- Assist in maintaining the general safety and cleanliness of the facility, reporting any hazardous conditions or needed repairs
- Follow all building and safety protocols as directed by management
- Work extended hours when required, including during snow events or emergencies
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
- Must be physically able to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive movements throughout the shift
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally with tenants, staff, and coworkers
- Ability to operate or learn to operate compactors, floor-stripping and waxing machines, buffing machines, and carpet extractors
- Dependable, flexible, and able to respond to emergencies and changing priorities
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Prior porter, custodial, or building maintenance experience (preferred)
