Position Summary: The Rock Underground Music School in Pine Island, NY, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Music Director to lead our school. The Music Director is the heart of our musical community, responsible for overseeing all educational programs, day-to-day operations, and business growth. This role requires a unique blend of musical talent, teaching passion, strong interpersonal skills and business acumen. The ideal candidate will inspire students and staff while driving the school's success and fostering a vibrant creative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Music Education & Performance Leadership
- Direct a majority of student performance ensembles and maintain a personal teaching roster of private lessons and bands, totaling at least 16 teaching hours per week.
- Develop semesterly themes and select musical content for school programs.
- Prepare chord charts, sheet music, and other materials for all bands as needed.
- Produce all school shows, including booking venues, arranging sound and lighting, managing staffing, and coordinating equipment.
- Recruit, support, and develop school instructors, ensuring their needs are met.
- Serve as a substitute teacher for qualified instruments based on availability.
School Operations & Studio Management
- Assist the Administrative Assistant with the master school schedule using MyMusicStaff, as necessary, in particular with trial lessons and new student onboarding
- Maintain the orderly appearance, cleanliness, and decor of the school.
- Manage, repair, or replace broken studio equipment as necessary.
- Develop and manage an inventory of instruments and accessories for sale or rental.
Business Development & Community Engagement
- Develop strong relationships with student families to assess needs and gather feedback.
- Represent the school at community and marketing events to promote our programs.
- Manage the school's social media presence and create graphics for events and posts.
- Develop relationships with local businesses, schools, and the Chamber of Commerce for co-promotion opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a music educator with proficiency in one or more core rock instruments (guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keyboards).
- Experience in a management or administrative role, preferably within a music school or educational environment.
- Strong understanding of business operations, including scheduling, billing, and customer service.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with students, parents, and staff.
- Proficiency with scheduling software (e.g., MyMusicStaff) and payment platforms (e.g., Stripe) is highly desirable. Separate hiring for administrative assistant will be under evaluation.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary: A competitive annual salary of $45,000-$50,000.
- Bonus: Eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus tied to school profitability.
- Vacation: 4 weeks of paid vacation annually, with 2 of those weeks coinciding with scheduled school closures.
