Student Support Leader responsibilities are:

Effective collaboration with team members, demonstrating flexibility and clear communication to foster a positive and supportive work environment. Build strong relationships with supervisors and colleagues by sharing relevant program information to appropriate stakeholders, submit deliverables punctually, and actively participate in program events.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Student Support Leader provides a safe, caring, positive, and engaging learning environment for students. They plan and facilitate enrichment activities, athletics, academic support, and community-building experiences for youth in grades TK-12. Depending on site assignment, an Activity Leader may lead a group of up to 25 students, coach a team, work with a small group, or provide one-on-one support to a student with additional needs. Programming may span sports, multicultural arts, wellness, homework support, STEAM, social-emotional learning, restorative practice, and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Direct Service (85%)
• Build authentic, strength-based relationships with all youth and maintain consistent positive rapport throughout the program.
• Model SEL skills, facilitate student engagement and behavior management using these strategies. Foster a positive and inclusive culture through clear communication and mutual respect.
• Lead field trips, off-campus activities / athletic events, and cross-site collaborations with prior Program Manager approval.
• Follow snack monitoring and nutritional guidelines; maintain a safe, healthy, and clean environment.
• Apply approved behavior guidance models and restorative practice to address student behaviors and community harm.
• Maintain active supervision of participants at all times and de-escalate conflicts through restorative conversation. Follow all safety protocols in response to injuries, falls, physical altercations, etc.
• For students requiring specialized 1:1 support: create a daily activity plan aligned with the student's goals, apply positive behavior intervention and de-escalation strategies, support social skill development, assist with daily living skills as needed, and maintain detailed records of behavior and growth.

Administrative (15%)

• Write and submit lesson plans and supply requests on time, in alignment with program and funder requirements.
• Submit daily attendance and incident / injury reports accurately and promptly.
• Communicate with the Program Manager regarding programmatic, personnel, or student concerns; follow mandated reporting procedures and report boundary violations per Board of Education policy.
• Maintain
• Keep all program spaces clean and organized.
• Actively participate in staff meetings and ongoing professional development, including DEI initiatives.
• Complete time and HR procedures accurately and in a timely manner.

Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.

• Plan and facilitate daily and weekly inclusive enrichment activities adapted to the developmental, cultural, physical, and individual needs of participants. Include clear plans, expectations, and goals for each activity.
• Facilitate homework help and academic support during designated academic hours; develop alternative plans for students who don't need homework support.
• Collaborate with school-day staff and families to support student goals, share relevant information, and ensure continuity between the school day and afterschool program.
• Build community among participants through community-builders, group discussions, collaborative projects, restorative practice, and community events.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

• Must meet SFUSD Instructional Aide Requirements: An Associate’s degree or higher OR Official transcripts reflecting 48 college units and a high school diploma/equivalent OR Completion of CBEST and a high school diploma/equivalent OR passing the SFUSD Instructional Aide exam

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum one year experience with middle school youth, preferably in an afterschool program setting
• A diverse experience with various hobbies, activities, and interests, especially in the areas of STEM/STEAM and art
• Certified in First Aid/CPR (Preferred)
• Experience with Restorative Practices (Preferred)

• Ability to stand, walk, and remain on your feet for extended periods of up to 6 or more hours, including on uneven or slippery surfaces

• Lead and actively participate in physical activities, games, and sports with campers
• Maintain visual supervision of a group of participants at all times
• React swiftly to prevent injury or respond to an incident

• Frequently walk and sit for periods of time throughout the workday, with occasional reaching
• Regularly use a computer, including extended keyboard use requiring repetitive hand and finger motion and dexterity

Requirements for All Staff:

• DOJ Live Scan Fingerprinting: All employees who have contact with youth under the age of 18 must be fingerprinted under procedures established by the DOJ. We cannot employ any individual who has been convicted of a serious or violent felony, as defined by the California Penal Code. The organization also receives updated information from the DOJ during employment. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records on a case by case basis.
• TB Test: Every employee who has regular contact with youth is required to have a current tuberculin skin test or an X-ray examination of the lungs (with a negative result) prior to reporting for duty.
