Department Description

The goal of TRP’s Immigrant Justice Department (IJ) is to provide opportunities for authentic local immigrant leadership, to offer holistic community-based immigration legal services, and to work in coalitions to expand access to legal representation. The Immigrant Justice Legal Clinic offers direct legal services while engaging clients in advocacy and education, and provides resources for the community to prepare for changes in immigration policy.

General Job Description

The Community Organizer leads TRP’s community protection and defense work. In coordination with the IJ team and partner organizations, the Community Organizer implements TRP’s rapid response work, organizes participatory deportation defense campaigns, and participates in immigrant justice campaigns.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

Deportation Defense

· Serves as first point of contact for immigration enforcement actions threatening families and communities

· Works in partnership with other organizations to build deportation defense rapid response infrastructure to protect families and communities.

· Convenes community and organizational partners.

· Attends and represents TRP at interagency and community meetings and roundtables

· Builds relationships with local schools, churches, and neighborhood institutions to support deportation defense work.

· Develops and leads participatory deportation defense campaigns including individual deportation cases

· Actively participate in public education workshops regarding important immigration issues facing the community.

· Assist with implementation of communications and media strategy related to deportation defense.

Leadership Development

· Implement TRP base-building strategy for individuals and families directly impacted by detention and deportation

· Work with base of TRP leaders to implement deportation defense strategy

· Support Senior Organizer for Leadership Programs with trainings, meetings, actions, and events with TRP base

Advocacy Campaigns

· Support Senior Organizers for Campaigns with advocacy campaigns

Additional Duties

· Must keep informed of changes in immigration law and procedures.

· Cultivate, manage, and expand relationships with participants, leaders and TRP partner institutions to promote and further TRP’s organizational mission.

· Maintain required job skills and core professional competencies.

· Attend and participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance Measures

· Successful implementation of rapid response strategy

· Successful implementation of deportation defense campaigns and actions including rapid response, digital strategies, press conferences and other public events

· Number of community and inter-organizational convenings

· Attendance and active participation at partner meetings

· Successfully supporting TRP IJ base-building work

· Successfully supporting TRP IJ advocacy campaigns

Essential Knowledge and Skills

· Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.

· Experience working with immigrant communities.

· Demonstrated commitment to immigrant justice.

· Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environment

· Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.

· Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, and organization skills.

· Demonstrated public speaking skills.

· Proficient knowledge of MS Office and Internet required.

Special Working Conditions and Demands

· On-site work schedule: as needed, and no less than 3 days per week.

· Willingness to work flexible hours; some evenings and weekends required.

· Access to a car, valid driver’s license and insurance, and ability to travel throughout the state.

Position Classification and Salary Full-Time, Exempt, $60,000 - $70,000 annually
