What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate position at The Refuge Utah?
Position Purpose and Responsibilities:
The Shelter Advocate position works at our domestic violence shelter (located at an undisclosed location in Provo, UT) providing a temporary home for domestic violence victims and their children. This position works primarily on nights and weekends to provide coverage for the shelter. Primary job duties include:
- Answer hotline phone calls and provide crisis intervention and resources options to callers on the hotline.
- Attend to the overall needs of domestic violence victims and their children while living in the shelter.
- Ensure a safe and secure environment across shelter grounds and living spaces for all clients.
- Assist in supervising volunteers by offering instructions and support as need
- Clarify, explain, and reinforce the rules, policies, and procedures for clients.
- Handle crisis situations in a mature and appropriate manner.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the shelter.
- Clear and conduct Intake process with new clients. Take each client that arrives at the shelter through the intake process including going through the Client Intake Packet with the client, assigning a bedroom, and giving a tour of the shelter.
Position Qualifications:
- Strong situational awareness skills.
- Can pass a background check and fingerprinting assessment.
- Can complete 24 hours of domestic violence training in your first calendar year as mandated by the state of Utah. The agency will provide the necessary training over the course of several weeks.
