Remote Opportunity to Lead Coding Operations with UVA Health

The Manager, Enterprise Hospital Coding Operations provides leadership and operational oversight for UVA Health's inpatient and outpatient hospital coding functions. This role is responsible for managing daily coding operations, coding workflow performance, unbilled accounts, turnaround times, staffing, and productivity across enterprise hospital coding teams. The Manager oversees inpatient and outpatient coding supervisors, coding staff, coding support personnel, and contract coding resources, ensuring efficient work allocation, achievement of departmental KPIs, and timely completion of coding activities. This position collaborates with Coding Quality & Education, CDI, Billing, Patient Access, ancillary departments and other operational leaders to support compliant coding practices, reduce DNFB accounts, and optimize revenue cycle performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct oversight of inpatient and outpatient coding operations.

  • Manage coding supervisors and coding support staff.

  • Monitor DNFB and operational KPIs.

  • Oversee staffing, workload distribution, and queue management.

  • Establish andmonitorproductivity, and turnaround time expectations.

  • Develop operational workflows that improve efficiency and customer service.

  • Create andmaintainup-to-date operational policies, procedures, and job descriptions.

  • Collaboratewithvarious Revenue Cycle andclinicaldepartments toidentifyand overcome roadblocks toeffective coding practices.

  • Lead hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and employee development activities.

  • Develop and implement action plans to address performance gaps.

  • Collaborate with the Manager of Coding Quality & Education to align operational and quality priorities.

The ideal candidate for the Manager, Enterprise Hospital Coding Operations has:

  • Minimum of 7 years of hospital coding experience, including inpatient coding experience within a large health system or academic medical center.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience managing coding operations, supervisors, or large coding teams.

  • Demonstrated success managing coding productivity, turnaround times, DNFB inventories, staffing, and operational performance metrics.

  • Experience managing large remote coding teams that include both employed and contract coding resources.

  • Demonstrated success managing multiple coding service lines through subordinate leaders and supervisors.

  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRGand APR-DRG reimbursement methodologies.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to monitor KPIs,identifyoperational trends, and implement performance improvement strategies.

  • Experience with Epic, Solventum, and coding workflow management tools.

  • AHIMA certification as RHIA or RHIT.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree required. Significant (4 years) experiencebeyondthe required experience indicated below may be accepted in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 7 years of previous coding experience, to include 2 years of formal management experience required. Strong preference forformal management experience in hospital coding or revenue cycle operations.

Licensure:Active coding certificationthrougheitherAHIMA or AAPC required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The pay range for this role is $76,420.00 - $152,840.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
