What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Specialist, Advanced Microscopy Facility position at The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia?
The Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) at the University of Virginia is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Lab Specialist. The specialist will provide technical support including sample preparation and equipment maintenance, help with the development of advanced imaging technologies, and aid with image analysis projects.
About the Advanced Microscopy Facility: We provide extensive microscopy services, training, technical support, and data analysis to UVA scientists, and also collaborate on imaging projects across the wider UVA scientific community. We have five confocal microscopes (Zeiss LSM980 Airyscan 2, LSM880 Airyscan, LSM700, Leica Stellaris 8 STED with FALCON and Leica Stellaris 8 DIVE multiphoton), one Zeiss Lightsheet7 microscope, and one Leica Thunder imager with TIRF. The electron microscopy features a Jeol JSM-IT-800HL field-emission scanning electron microscope. In addition, there is an array of sample preparation equipment including a LifeCanvas SmartBatch for Tissue Clearing and Immunolabeling, one ACE600 sputter coater, and two critical point dryers. HIVE high-performance image data server is also available for 4D image data analysis.
Required Qualifications:
- Handson experience with light microscopy, including widefield and confocal laser scanning microscopy.
- Handson experience with immunostaining sample preparation.
- Familiarity with quantitative data analysis (Imaris, Avia, Fiji, CellProfiler, QuPath, etc). Python/Java scripting experience is preferred.
- Ability to manage diverse, rapidly changing responsibilities in fastpaced, collaborative research environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to users with varying levels of expertise.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
- Experience: 1 year of relevant lab experience required.
- Licensure: None.
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and otherbenchworkand animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Compensation: The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with education and experience.
