The Queen's Medical Center's Pain and Palliative Care Program provides specialized care for patients experiencing serious illness, chronic pain, and complex symptom management needs. The program offers both inpatient and outpatient services, focusing on improving quality of life through comprehensive pain management, symptom control, emotional support, and assistance with medical decision-making. Physicians work closely with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop individualized care plans that align with each patient's goals and preferences. In addition to direct patient care, the program serves as a resource for education and consultation, supporting healthcare providers, medical trainees, and the community in understanding pain and palliative care principles. The team is also actively involved in teaching, research, and the development of clinical standards that promote excellence in patient-centered care.

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Staff Physician, Pain & Palliative Care to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pain and palliative care services. This position offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality patient care while contributing to medical education, program development, and interdisciplinary collaboration within The Queen's Health Systems. The physician will partner with the Medical Director to support clinical excellence, quality improvement initiatives, and the continued development of Pain and Palliative Care services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Provide direct patient care and consultation services for patients requiring pain and symptom management in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Deliver pain and palliative care services across multiple care environments, including the Medical Center, inpatient hospice, Cancer Center, and Emergency Department.
  • Collaborate with referring physicians and multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and educator regarding pain and palliative care best practices.

Teaching & Education

  • Teach and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows from the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine and other affiliated training programs.
  • Mentor physicians, residents, nurses, and ancillary staff in pain and palliative care principles.
  • Participate in community education and outreach efforts to increase awareness of available pain and palliative care services.

Research & Program Development

  • Participate in clinical research and scholarly activities that contribute to the advancement of pain and palliative care.
  • Support the development and implementation of clinical standards, protocols, quality management initiatives, and service enhancements within the program.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Complete all clinical documentation, coding, and charge capture accurately and timely in compliance with organizational policies, CMS regulations, and PATH guidelines.
  • Adhere to all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or possess ECFMG certification.
  • Board Certified in a primary specialty.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaiʻi.
  • Current CPR certification at the Healthcare Provider level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine from an accredited fellowship program.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pain Medicine.

Experience

  • Demonstrated competence in both pain medicine and palliative medicine.
  • Ability to maintain medical staff membership in good standing with appropriate clinical privileges.
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Base salary begins at $346,712/year with opportunity for productivity and quality incentives.
