POSITION SUMMARY
The Drafting Manager is responsible for the effective supervision and operation of both in-house and third-party drafting teams. This role ensures that project timelines are met, all deliverables are of the highest quality, and departmental standards are strictly adhered to. The Drafting Manager will also foster strong relationships with various departments, including Estimating, Engineering, Sales, Customer Service, and Project Management, while managing both internal and external resources. Ideal candidates will have a background in architecture or engineering with an organized, analytical mindset and strong proficiency in both AutoCAD and Revit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Ensure Compliance with Business Rules:
- Ensure business rules relevant to the Drafting department, including third-party teams, are followed, with special focus on targeted lead times and quality control.
Implementation of Drafting Standards:
- Implement and enforce drafting standards and techniques, utilizing AutoCAD, Revit, and other digital programs across both internal and external teams.
- Lead the adoption of new software tools and technologies to improve drafting processes and data management.
Departmental Reporting:
- Provide regular performance reports for both in-house and third-party teams to management as necessary.
- Monitor and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess team performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Implement reporting mechanisms for project tracking, completion, and filing.
Resource Allocation & Management:
- Advise on and manage appropriate resource levels for both internal and third-party drafting teams.
- Allocate shop drawing work to both internal and external teams, ensuring capacity.
Shop Drawing Supervision:
- Ensure proper execution of shop drawing practices by both internal and third-party teams, including:
- Drawing floor plans, elevations, and details per company formats and CAD library.
- Developing panel layouts based on customer requirements and sold scope of work.
- Conducting quality checks on peer drawings and bills of material.
- Reviewing and updating drawings according to customer redline corrections.
- Producing bills of material from approved sets of drawings in company format.
Third-Party Drafting Team Management:
- Supervise and coordinate with third-party drafting teams, ensuring they adhere to company standards and timelines.
- Regularly review the performance of third-party teams, ensuring that work quality meets expectations and addressing any issues promptly.
- Facilitate clear communication and workflow integration between in-house and third-party teams.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Interface with internal and external groups such as Project Management, Estimating, Materials/Logistics, Engineering, and Customer/Architect contacts as needed to complete tasks.
- Foster strong relationships with all departments to ensure efficient project execution and resolve issues quickly.
Information Interpretation:
- Obtain and interpret internal order acknowledgements and customer-supplied structural steel and architectural plans to guide both in-house and third-party teams.
Warranty Issue Resolution:
- Investigate and document drafting-related warranty issues, collaborating with both internal and third-party teams, and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Investigate, document, and create detailed reports on non-conformities, including drafting errors or deviations from project specifications, collaborating with internal and third-party teams to identify causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Hiring & Training:
- Assist in interviewing prospective employees, ensuring a strong fit with company values and the required technical expertise.
- Oversee the training of new hires, focusing on industry standards, best practices, and company-specific workflows to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to all drafting team
- Promote a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing to ensure teams remain updated on industry trends, compliance requirements, and evolving best practices.
Process Improvement:
- Collaborate with internal and third-party teams to develop new processes/systems that enhance support to the business and improve project outcomes.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts to streamline workflows and increase departmental efficiency.
Team Supervision:
- Provide supervision, guidance, and mentorship to both internal and external drafting teams to ensure optimal effectiveness.
- Assign and oversee projects, ensuring accountability for deadlines and performance of both in-house and third-party resources.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for both teams.
- Lead problem-solving efforts on issues impacting customer delivery lead times and production across all drafting teams.
- Collaborate with the project management team to objectively assess risks to project timelines and develop solutions as needed.
Shipping & Revenue Targets:
- Provide input to the shipping forecast and help drive shipping and revenue targets, ensuring alignment with monthly and quarterly goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or a related technical field with a focus on drafting.
- Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in drafting.
- 2 years supervisory or leadership experience.
- Ability to read and interpret Construction Documents, structural and architectural drawings.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with a focus on efficiency and structure.
- Mathematical skills necessary for accurate calculations and problem-solving in drafting and project management.
- Ability to meet deadlines and problem-solve with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in both AutoCAD and Revit.
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- Minimum 3 years of AutoCAD and REVIT experience.
- Must be highly proficient in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams) and Outlook.
- SolidWorks and Smartsheet experience is desirable.
