GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):
Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities or designee, the Grounds Maintenance Custodian performs a variety of labor and maintenance tasks to ensure the proper upkeep, safety, and appearance of school grounds and athletic fields, while supporting overall facility operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of vocational or apprenticeship training attaining journeyman status in the recognized building trade.
- Related work experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, irrigation, turf management, or maintenance, Sport Field layout design
- Ability to operate and maintain landscaping and grounds equipment
- Skill is required in performing maintenance work at the journeyman level in one or more recognized building trades
- DOT Medical card, 2A Hoisting License, 10 hr OSHA certification
- Basic mechanical skills with the ability to perform minor repairs
- Ability to follow directions and respond to staff needs as they arise
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and the public
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license with satisfactory driving record
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree in landscaping, turf management, or related field
- Additional training in maintenance or grounds equipment operation and repair
Special Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully.
- Ability to work with staff and the public.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines efficiently.
- Ability to keep confidential information that is sensitive in nature.
- Ability to be flexible in the scheduling of time during peak periods of the school year.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):
- Perform routine groundskeeping duties including fertilizing, seeding, mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming shrubbery and trees
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields, including grooming, lining, and mowing for sporting events
- Turf Maintenance/ Sweep, rake, and remove leaves, litter, and debris from school grounds
- Operate school equipment to maintain grounds and transport materials
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on grounds equipment
- Maintain inventory of supplies and submit requisitions as needed
- Assist & Manage with snow removal and application of ice melt/sand on walkways, parking lots, and driveways
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Assist custodial and maintenance staff as needed
- Perform all other duties as assigned
- Other duties as needed
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, with occasional indoor responsibilities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to walk, stand, climb, stoop, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment required for the job
- Ability to safely operate machinery and tools used in grounds maintenance
Good physical stamina is required to perform the job duties. The person must be able to stand for extended periods of time while performing duties. Must be able to use and move cleaning and maintenance equipment throughout the buildings. Must be able to climb a ladder and work in high places. The employee will be required to be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extremes of heat/cold up to 2/3 of the time. The employee is generally required to talk and/or listen, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Use hands and reach with hands and arms more than 2/3 of the time. The employee regularly lifts up to 45 lbs. and occasionally lifts up to 75 lbs. The position has normal vision and hearing requirements.
