Faculty Position - Upper School English Position The Potomac School - McLean, VA 22101 Overview Position Type Full Time Education Level 4 Year Degree Category Education Description The Potomac School English Department is seeking a dynamic and collaborative English teacher to join our Upper School faculty beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. This role is designed for a dedicated educator who is passionate about student-centered learning in grades 9-12. Reporting to the Head of Upper School, this position will play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of writers and thinkers within a supportive and innovative academic community. Duties and Responsibilities: Manage course load including four classes and a student advisory. Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussions, group activities, and occasional lectures. Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth as writers. Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, inform parents of progress. Foster a sense of belonging in the classroom. Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students. Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops. Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught. Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner. Advise a small group of students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth. Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required Minimum of two years’ experience with grades 9-12 Skilled in writing and preparing lesson plans. Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs. Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community. Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement. Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.
