The Opportunity: Director, Crane & Vehicle Maintenance


The main objective of this position is to direct and lead operations for the maintenance and safe operation of a large array of vehicles and crane equipment for Port of Virginia (POV) facilities, to include light to medium duty vehicles, Ship-to-Shore cranes, remote/piloted stacking cranes, trans-lifters, and shuttle trucks.


What You’ll Do: Responsibilities



  • Promotes safety awareness and ensures compliance with all security, safety (OSHA), and environmental regulations and policies within work areas at all times. 

  • Develops and contributes to crane and vehicle maintenance strategies, alongside senior leadership and operational colleagues, to ensure continued availability of safe equipment that operates within manufacturer specifications. 

  • Implements crane and vehicle maintenance objectives, policies, programs, and priorities. Establishes and maintains safe and productive maintenance procedures to achieve departmental and organizational target objectives. 

  • Develops a multi-level maintenance workforce capable of meeting varying volume and schedule demands. 

  • Defines, communicates, and enforces departmental objectives, goals and targets to employees. 

  • Provides reports to senior management on maintenance projects, activities, and issues. 

  • Collaborates with AP&R to analyze and assess assets and contribute to the requirements and evaluations of major equipment purchases. 

  • Assists Project and AP&R teams with Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and works with Procurement to develop Master Services Agreements (MSAs) for current and future equipment needs. 

  • Oversees resource allocation as directed by Operations 

  • Creates and manages the crane and vehicle maintenance budget, seeking ways to minimize costs by eliminating redundancies, optimizing utilization of resources, and maintaining high productivity levels. Tracks spending and develop cost reports. 

  • Manages relationships with ILA partners working within operational department. Ensures compliance to labor contracts and agreements. Ensures that disciplinary actions are consistent with company policies. 

  • Collaborates with Procurement, Warehousing, vendors and OEMs to ensure maintenance teams have the parts, resources, supplies, and tools necessary for daily activities. 

  • Fosters and maintains positive relationships with union leaders and address systemic contractual issues. 

  • Directs activities and manages performance within the department. Provides guidance, training, coaching, conflict resolution, and workforce development to managers and staff across crane and vehicle maintenance. Maintains compliance with labor requirements. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Ideal candidate demonstrates a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, along with strong verbal and written communication skills. They possess excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities and are highly organized, with the capability to prioritize work effectively and report on progress. Additionally, they excel in managing multiple tasks within an ever-changing environment to meet departmental needs. The ideal candidate also brings strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with a proven ability to influence others and drive collaboration. Education


Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master’s degree preferred. 


Licenses, Certifications, and Credentials


Valid driver’s license; Transportation Worker Identification Credential


Work Experience


Seven years of relevant experience required with ten years preferred; five years in a leadership capacity required. Relevant education/training may replace some years of experience.

Salary : $161,412 - $201,766
