Senior Cloud FinOps Engineer (Hybrid – Bozeman, MT)
The Opportunity
We are an integrated, nonprofit healthcare delivery system serving an eleven-county region in Southwest Montana. Operating our own highly rated, award-winning Epic EHR instance, we deliver expert, compassionate care across the entire health continuum.
We are seeking a Senior Cloud FinOps Engineer to take the absolute lead on our Microsoft Azure cloud ecosystem. This is a foundational role where you will own the architectural and financial strategy for a major multi-year modernization effort. You will join a highly supportive, collaborative 6-engineer infrastructure team that is eager to step out of legacy paradigms and into modern, 21st-century cloud-native practices. They will challenge your ideas in a healthy, collaborative way—meaning you must be ready to have an opinion, defend your technical decisions, and absorb elite feedback.
This role represents a direct path to leadership and supervisor responsibilities while keeping the organization on the cutting edge (not the bleeding edge) of healthcare technology
The Mission & Current Landscape
- The Blueprint: You will design and implement the frameworks, processes, and tools that optimize cloud financial management, bridging the gap between finance, operations, and engineering.
- The Horizon: You are jumping in at the ground floor. We are kicking off brand-new projects across the Azure space on the FinOps side. You will drive a 3-month planning phase, followed by a 1-year execution of Phase 1.
- The Environment: We run 600 total servers spread across two physical data centers. Your core architectural challenge will be executing a migration strategy that shifts a massive footprint into Azure while intentionally maintaining one data center on-premise.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Azure FinOps and cost-governance strategy.
- Predict and model future cloud service expenses based on complex usage trends and system migrations.
- Continuously monitor, analyze, and optimize cloud consumption to eliminate waste and enforce architectural efficiency.
- Partner closely with the infrastructure team to embed cloud financial accountability into automated deployment workflows.
- Create actionable dashboards and reports detailing cloud spend, capacity utilization, and optimization pathways for leadership.
- Maintain vendor relationships to ensure optimal pricing models, enterprise agreements, and billing accuracy.
- Act as a technical mentor, upskilling peer engineers on cloud-native infrastructure practices.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to support the broader system infrastructure.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field (equivalent combination of education and enterprise experience will be evaluated).
- Cloud & Infra Depth: Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience driving cloud infrastructure, automation frameworks, and infrastructure operations.
- FinOps Expertise: Minimum 3 years of dedicated experience specializing in Azure cloud financial management, billing models, cost optimization, and native reporting tools.
- Certification: FinOps Certified Practitioner designation, or the explicit ability to obtain this certification within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working within a healthcare IT department or a highly regulated, compliance-driven enterprise environment.
