Job Title: Editor / Reporter / Writer
Newspaper: The Osage Oracle
Location: Osage, Iowa (Mitchell County)
The Osage Oracle is seeking a motivated Editor/Reporter/Writer to join our growing local newsroom. This position plays a key role in covering the people, events, and issues that matter most to Mitchell County. We are looking for someone who values community journalism and wants to help tell the stories of where we live.
Experience in newspapers or journalism is a plus, but not required. Strong writing skills, curiosity, reliability, and a desire to learn are essential.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Report and write local news stories, features, and profiles
- Cover city council, school board, county government, and community meetings
- Assist with editing, proofreading, and fact-checking content
- Conduct interviews with community members, leaders, and organizations
- Help develop story ideas that reflect the voice and interests of Mitchell County
- Contribute to print and digital editions of The Osage Oracle
- Meet weekly deadlines and collaborate with the editorial team
Qualifications:
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
- Comfortable interacting with the public and conducting interviews
- Basic computer skills; familiarity with digital publishing is a plus
- Journalism, communications, or related background is helpful but not required
Ideal Candidate:
- Someone who currently lives in Mitchell County or wants to make Mitchell County their long-term home
- Interested in local history, schools, sports, government, and community life
- Passionate about local journalism and storytelling
