Description:

This position is based across 2 clinic locations in Park City & Cottonwood Heights. Flexibility and willingness to travel between both locations on a regular basis is an essential part of the role.

The Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for assisting the supervising physician, Dr Cooley (Knee Specialist) in the medical and surgical management of patients. The AT will work directly to support Dr Cooley as well as supporting physician assistants, medical assistants, administrative staff. The AT will serve the medical practice in a variety of clinical duties including but not limited to: patient education, evaluation, treatment and management of sports medicine and orthopaedic injuries/illnesses, and perioperative patient care. Time will be divided between the clinic, operating room and administrative tasks centered on patient care. Time devoted to each setting may vary by week.

Core Job Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:

  • Contributes to a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care; evaluate and document injuries of patients upon intake.
  • Obtains patient history, performs physical exams, educates patients and answer questions, organize notes and radiographs, casting/splinting, DME fitting.
  • Ensures application of aseptic techniques in performing dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, Steinman pins, K-wires, and in setting up surgical fields and draping in the operating room.
  • Performs in an operating room environment in a professional manner as a second assistant or scrub technician under the direct supervision of a surgeon.
  • Assists at removal of sutures, pins, and external fixators from post-operative patients.
  • Assists at preparation of therapeutic and diagnostic injections.
  • Applies, adjusts, and removes orthopaedic devices and instructs patients in their use.
  • Applies skin, skeletal, and manual traction.
  • May serve as technical advisor and liaison to the hospital personnel in matters pertaining to orthopaedic devices and equipment; may be asked to order and stock DME supplies for medical practice.
  • Record in patient’s chart, condition, progress, and assessment for review by the orthopaedic surgeon.
  • In collaboration with other providers on the team, reviews patient records, perform patient assessment, establish functional goals and design rehabilitative treatment plans with the patient and family.
  • Helps team to assess educational needs of the patient, family or caregiver, and provide education to meet those needs, and develop plans for discharge. Collaborates to instruct patients and families in procedures to be continued at home.
  • Communicates effectively with patient, family, caregivers, and members of the multidisciplinary team to promote the maximum benefit of care and rehabilitation.
  • Collaborates to ensure all patient documentation is kept up to date and in a professional manner, according to clinic and hospital protocols. May obtain preoperative surgical consents and informed consent for research studies.
  • May be asked to participate in outreach activities including health and sports exhibitions, presentations and lectures.
  • May collect and file digital/visual recordings of surgical procedures for project cases.
  • Contributes to the development of new patient educational materials such as patient instructions and exercise handouts.
  • Connects with the larger team to ensure the development of evidence-based clinical protocols and patient assessment forms.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients.
  • Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and other required meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements:

Residency-training, preferred; or equivalent professional experience.

Professional experience as an AT preferred

Bachelor’s degree required in related field such as Sports Medicine, Athletic Training or life sciences. Master’s degree preferred.

In good standing with the BOC required.

Meet State AT licensing and registration requirements.

Current Certification in AHA or ARC Basic Life Support for healthcare providers required.

Advanced organization and communication skills required.

Advanced organization, communication (both written and verbal), and interpersonal skills required.

Proven history of ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment; excellent critical thinking skills, ability to work with nominal oversight, and manage time effectively.

Must be energetic, quality driven and have proven ability to be productive member of a cohesive team of peers dedicated to providing optimum patient care.

Must maintain a professional attitude towards patients and an excellent and collegial working relationship with other Clinic staff
