The Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) is the steward of the Government of the District of Columbia’s (District’s) finances. Since its creation in 1996, OCFO’s mission is to ensure the financial integrity and long-term fiscal health of the District. OCFO accomplishes this mission by ensuring balanced budgets, unqualified or “clean” audit opinions, and access to quality credit markets with high and improving bond ratings.


OCFO’s operational responsibilities include forecasting the District’s revenues and financial condition, developing and managing the District’s budget, administering the District’s taxes, and executing and recording the District’s financial transactions. In addition, OCFO administers the District’s lottery and gaming programs, and oversees the finances of the University of the District of Columbia and the Washington Convention and Sports Authority (Events DC).


We are in search of a Supervisory Tax Auditor. This position is located in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR), Audit and Criminal Investigation Administration (ACI). The incumbent plans, coordinates and schedules activities pertaining to auditing and assessing individuals and businesses, which include various tax type accounts to ensure that taxpayers are correctly reporting and complying with laws administered by the Office of Tax and Revenue. Initiates, plans, organizes work assignments consistent with Division's goals and objectives.


Additional duties include, but are not limited to:


Leadership and Operations Management

  • Plans and carries-out the training and development of employees; evaluates work performance and takes necessary action for assuring efficient and economical work operations.
  • Evaluates, advises and participates in the formulation of departmental policies, programs and operational plans, and establishes internal controls and procedures in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.


Technical Guidance

  • Answers questions, counsels tax auditors on policy, procedures, laws, regulations, court decisions, precedents, accounting principles, auditing and examining techniques and other matters relating to administrative aspects of their work.
  • Conducts negotiations and/or informal hearings with taxpayers and their representatives in connection with audits.
  • Reviews completed cases and reports to ensure accuracy and quality.


External Engagement

  • Testifies or prepares necessary witnesses or documentary evidence to sustain the District of Columbia's position on matters referred to judicial or administrative hearings.
  • Appears before civic groups, business and professional associations and trade groups for the purpose of disseminating tax information and maintaining good public relations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications: Six (6) years of progressive experience performing the related duties and responsibilities such as analyzing, compiling and interpreting tax and/or other financial information; conducting audits and audit investigations; applying accounting and financial analysis techniques in order to make sound decisions and reach appropriate conclusions; and preparing audit and/or financial reports. Incumbent must also possess knowledge of accounting and auditing laws; have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; have demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to exercise sound reasoning and judgment; and have a least one (1) year experience planning and managing the day-to-day activities and work production or lower level staff. The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

In addition – Applicant must have a bachelor's degree earned at an accredited US institution in accounting or related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. This can include up to six (6) hours of business law. Applicants must submit an official transcript that verifies a bachelor's degree in accounting or related field and 24 semester credit hours in accounting in order to be considered. If applicable, your application package must include a foreign credential course by course evaluation of all foreign transcripts. Acceptable foreign credential equivalency reports must be provided by organizations that have current membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE).
