Sound Engineer / Live Sound Technician

Location: Small Live Music Venue
Reports To: General Manager / Entertainment Manager

Position Summary

The Sound Engineer is responsible for providing high-quality live sound for performers and guests while ensuring all audio equipment is properly maintained and operated. This position plays a key role in creating a professional entertainment experience by managing sound checks, live mixes, stage setup, and equipment troubleshooting during performances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Before the Show

  • Arrive prior to scheduled performances to prepare and test all audio equipment.
  • Set up microphones, monitors, DI boxes, cables, and other sound equipment as needed.
  • Coordinate with performers regarding stage plots, input lists, and technical requirements.
  • Conduct sound checks and monitor checks with performers.
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning properly before doors open.

During the Show

  • Operate the front-of-house (FOH) mixing console.
  • Adjust sound levels to maintain a balanced mix for guests and performers.
  • Monitor stage volume and assist performers with monitor mix adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues quickly and professionally.
  • Maintain appropriate volume levels while preserving sound quality.
  • Communicate effectively with performers, venue management, and staff.

After the Show

  • Power down and secure all audio equipment.
  • Store microphones, cables, and related equipment properly.
  • Report equipment issues, repairs, or replacement needs to management.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized sound booth and stage area.

Equipment Responsibilities

  • Mixing consoles and digital audio systems
  • Stage monitors and in-ear monitor systems
  • Microphones and wireless microphone systems
  • Speakers, amplifiers, and subwoofers
  • DI boxes and stage snakes
  • Audio playback systems and venue music sources

Qualifications

  • Previous live sound experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital mixing consoles.
  • Understanding of gain structure, EQ, compression, feedback control, and monitor mixing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot audio equipment and signal flow issues.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds.

  • Provide consistent, professional-quality sound for every performance.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with performers and venue staff.
  • Minimize technical interruptions and equipment downtime.
  • Present a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Protect venue equipment and maintain a safe work environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience mixing live bands of various genres.
  • Familiarity with digital mixers such as Behringer X32, Allen & Heath, or Yamaha systems.
  • Basic knowledge of stage lighting systems.
  • Experience with recording live performances or livestream audio.

Success Measures

  • Positive feedback from performers and guests.
  • Consistent show quality with minimal technical issues.
  • Proper care and maintenance of venue sound equipment.
  • On-time setup and efficient show execution.

Typical Schedule: Friday and Saturday evenings, special events, and occasional weekday performances as scheduled.
Compensation: Hourly or per-show rate based on experience.
