Position Summary
The Head Coach of the Boys Basketball program is responsible for leading and developing all aspects of the program in alignment with the mission and values of The Nueva School. This includes fostering a positive, educational-based athletic experience, emphasizing character development, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Culture
- Develop and articulate a clear vision and philosophy for the basketball program.
- Build a culture centered on integrity, accountability, teamwork, and respect.
- Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes on and off the court.
Coaching & Player Development
- Plan and lead all practices, games, and team activities.
- Teach fundamental and advanced basketball skills, strategies, and systems.
- Support the physical, mental, and emotional development of student-athletes.
- Provide regular feedback and evaluation to players.
Program Management
- Oversee all levels of the program (Varsity, JV, and Middle School).
- Mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches.
- Coordinate team schedules, including practices, games, and travel with Assistant AD.
Student-Athlete Support
- Support student-athlete well-being and balance between academics and athletics.
- Assist with college placement guidance for interested student-athletes.
Communication & Community Engagement
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with players, families, and school administration (weekly email).
- Represent the program positively within the school and broader community.
- Organize and support program events, camps, or clinics.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with all school, league, and state athletic association rules.
- Prioritize player safety, including proper training techniques and injury protocols.
- Maintain required certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid, concussion training).
Qualifications
- Previous high school, collegiate, or higher-level coaching experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, and player development.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire student-athletes.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of The Nueva School environment.
- Bachelor’s degree recommended.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience working in an independent/private school setting.
- Ability to contribute to the school community beyond coaching.
- Strong emphasis on character development and leadership training.
- Experience with program building and long-term athlete development.
Season & Time Commitment
- Winter sport season (with expected off-season engagement including workouts, clinics, and program development).
- Availability for after-school practices, games, and occasional weekend commitments.
