JOB DESCRIPTION: STAFF DEVELOPMENT/IN-SERVICE DIRECTOR/INFECTION CONTROL NURSE. MUST HAVE NURSING HOME EXPERIENCE

Department: Nursing

Purpose:

The primary purpose of your position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct all in-services, and educational programs throughout the facility in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards guidelines au regulations, and as may be directed by the Administrator or Director of Nurses to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.

Reporting Relationships:

The Staff Development /In-Service Director position reports to the Director of Nursing Service/Administrator.

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as a RN in the state in which the facility is located.
  • Must have at least two years of nursing experience in a hospital, nursing care facility, or other related healthcare facility.
  • Must have knowledge of and interest in the care of the geriatric resident.
  • Must have experience in supervision and principles, practice of teaching, etc.
  • Must possess skills in leadership and communication.
  • Must possess creativity, integrity, and initiative.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of team work and team concept.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing training practices.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents and staff.

Delegation of Authority:

As Staff Development/In-Service Director you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for carrying out your assigned duties.

  • Demonstrates respect for coworkers and responds to needs of residents by complying with facility policies on attendance and punctuality and dress code
  • Able to arrive and begin work on time and to report for duty as scheduled on all shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Able to interact effectively with individuals who are cognitively impaired and/ or physically impaired.
  • Working knowledge and ability to comply with facility policies and procedures for workplace safety including infection control procedures, application of universal precautions.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities.

Physical, Psychological Demands:

  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress of the position. Examples of these stresses include, but not limited to: shift rotation, weekend and holiday duty, unusual or impaired behavior by residents, family reactions to having a loved one in the nursing home, death and dying, oversight of state surveyors, ombudsman and federal officials, presence of consultants and attorneys, and variable involvement of medical staff.
  • Must be able to -work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, and lift, without difficulty

Administrative Functions:

  • Plan, develop, direct, evaluate, and coordinate educational and on-the-job training programs, including Nurse Aide Training.
  • Incorporate commercially produced instruction material and training aides into existing in-service programs as deemed necessary.
  • Develop, evaluate and control the quality of the in-service educational programs in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Secure, develop and maintain records, reports, instructional manuals, reference material, videos, etc., pertinent to h-service training educational programs and orientations.
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, class attendance and subject records, etc.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the administrator/director of
  • nursing concerning in-service training programs
  • Assist departmental directors in obtaining and scheduling

speakers to present in- service educations programs. Attend Clinical Meetings and assist with care planning new
orders. Check Lift. Assessment and update lift log or Dot System. As needed, (room changes, significant changes, new admits and Discharges.)

  • In-service daily as needed on topics from recommendations given by Corporate or DON.
  • Administer/ Read TB skin test on Residents and Employees. Update resident and employee TB tracking log.

Request chest x-ray report, signs & symptoms form from md, and documentation from discharging hosp. If they administered tbst for all new admits. Update LTC with dates of residents' last TB Skin Test & signs & symptoms pneumonia vaccines for new admits who signed consent email pneumonia injection log to biller

  • Drug screens: For all new employees & for current employees as needed after injury
  • New hire check-offs:
  • CNA: Vander lift, Vera lift, Incontinent. Care, handwashing, assist with dining, CNA skills checklist, restorative training
  • Nurse: Vander lift, Vera lift, Accu-check, med pass evaluation, peg tube dressing change, handwashing
  • Check aide and nursing verification
  • Follow aide and nurses orientation check off list for training on AHT modules. SMART charting. Orders Administration. Echarting. etc.

WEEKLY:

  • MED CART CHECK

Inspect both med carts for: d/c meds, upcoming OTC meds expiring, insulin vials (must have open date; not open >28days), open dates on juice/med pass, no omissions on fridge temps/narc. Count sheets/ or accu-check control testing log, sharps container not overfilled, hand sanitizer not empty, no loose pills, cleanliness.

Med room: check all OTC stock meds for expiration dates, check W & E-Kit for expiration dates, general appearance, fridge temps

Check biohazard shed to ensure biohazard material has been stored correctly while waiting for pick-up via Green-Serv.

Shower Rooms: cabinet locked, sharps containers not overfilled

Storage Closet: ensure supplies have not been put on floor

Linen Closet: PEG feedings expiration date

  • Weekly Lifts & Sling Inspection
  • Room Rounds: During State Survey Window
  • High Risk Meetings As Scheduled

Verify CNA & CPR Certification, Nursing License And Expiration Date

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION

This position involves working with confidential information, inspecting controlled substances for expiration dates and other quality issues, training personnel in nursing techniques and best practices, administering TB skin tests on residents and employees, performing employee drug tests, and providing other nursing care to residents. A lapse of attention could result in the injury, illness or death of a resident.
