About the Role



The Senior Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Designer is generally responsible for performing all aspects of complex electrical and instrumentation design assignments utilizing theoretical knowledge, practical design methods, and industry best practices. This position requires extensive experience in industrial electrical and instrumentation design and involves applying advanced design techniques, analysis, and coordination across multiple disciplines.


Duties may include performing advanced design work while serving as a technical specialist for complex industrial projects. The Senior E&I Designer may serve as a Lead Designer on projects and is responsible for the quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned deliverables.



Responsibilities



  • Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.
  • Recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications, client requirements, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
  • Producing installation details, motor control center single lines, electrical room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, grounding plans, lighting plans, power distribution plans, and instrumentation installation drawings under minimal supervision.
  • Developing and maintaining electrical one-line diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, junction box drawings, PLC/DCS termination drawings, instrument indexes, instrument specification sheets, and P&ID updates.
  • Performing field walkdowns and gathering field data required to support project execution.
  • Reviewing vendor drawings and equipment documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Performing conduit sizing, cable sizing, conduit fill, cable tray fill, voltage drop, lighting, and electrical load calculations.
  • Producing material take-offs, Bills of Material (BOMs), and construction work packages.
  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced designers and drafters.
  • Coordinating work activities with engineering, operations, maintenance, project management, construction personnel, vendors, and contractors.
  • Reviewing and checking drawings and calculations prepared by other designers.
  • Supporting procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Proactively leading and coordinating design efforts to achieve scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary design reviews and quality assurance reviews.
  • Assisting with staffing plans, man-hour estimates, schedules, and project execution planning.
  • Interfacing directly with clients on technical matters and project execution activities.



Qualifications



  • Education: Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Certification: Certification is not required at this level.
  • Experience: This position requires 10 years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design. Fifteen (15) or more years of experience is preferred.
  • Experience in refining, petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, oil & gas, LNG, power generation, pulp & paper, or industrial manufacturing facilities is preferred.
  • Brownfield and field experience is required.



Required Skills



  • Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Knowledge of ISA, NFPA, and applicable industry standards.
  • Ability to perform lighting calculations.
  • Ability to size wire, conduit, cable tray, and overcurrent protection devices.
  • Ability to perform voltage drop calculations.
  • Ability to route conduit and cable tray systems.
  • Ability to calculate conduit fill and cable tray fill.
  • Familiarity with MCCs, switchgear, transformers, VFDs, UPS systems, and industrial power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation installation practices and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to create accurate construction documents from engineering sketches, specifications, and vendor documentation.
  • Ability to estimate material quantities and support construction cost estimates.
  • Knowledge and understanding of workflow and information flow between engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to coordinate with other disciplines regarding design development and project execution.
  • Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to lead small project teams and mentor junior personnel.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
