Job Overview

Under direction from NYRA Management, the Emergency Response Specialist is responsible for ensuring full compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and New York State Building Codes as they pertain to fire safety. The Fire Marshal works to prevent and suppress fires and responds to all emergency situations—exercising judgment and initiative to control and resolve incidents. NYRA’s objective is to prevent and minimize injury, loss of life, and property damage in all emergencies and fire situations.

Must be able to work on a racing schedule Wednesday through Sunday.

You must be able to remain on your feet for extended periods, with extensive walking and stair use.

You must have no fear of horses and be comfortable working in large crowd venues.

Essential Functions

Inspect areas to identify and correct any egress barriers, mitigate fire hazards, and ensure clear, unobstructed evacuation routes.

Implement Emergency Incident Action and Evacuation Plans.

Provide direct emergency response, including administering emergency medical.

Respond to fire alarm activations, emergency medical calls, and other urgent situations; direct and assist patrons and employees in evacuation during emergencies.

Address daily emergencies and non-emergencies as they arise, exercising considerable judgment and initiative until additional emergency services arrive.

Enforce NYRA Fire Safety Rules, Regulations, and Procedures among employees, vendors, and guests, documenting and issuing violations as necessary.

Perform related duties as directed by NYRA Management.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements :

High School Diploma or GED

Minimum of either: 3 years of experience as a professional firefighter working for a career department, or 5 years of experience as an active volunteer firefighter.

Note: Relevant work experience will be reviewed on an individual basis at the discretion of the Fire Inspector (Chief).

Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver License

Current CPR certification from an accredited provider.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Ability to obtain and maintain a NY State Gaming Commission license.

Completion of ICS courses 100, 700, and 800 is required.

Must be able to provide a fire dept reference.

Preferred Skills

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with proficiency in English.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with diverse individuals and groups

Skills Proficiency

Must meet NFPA 1001 standards (or New York State equivalent) for fire safety professionals.

Prior experience with a career or volunteer Fire Department is required, along with a proven track record in dealing with large crowds and effectively communicating to de-escalate stressful situations.

Customer relations skills and the ability to observe, objectively report, and clearly communicate during emergencies are essential.

In-depth expertise in fire safety and emergency management practices.

Proven ability to assess and mitigate hazardous conditions effectively.

Strong team leadership skills.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and computer communication skills.

Ability to work under minimal supervision and solve problems independently by adapting and overcoming challenges.

Summary Of Physical Requirements And Work Environment

he Fire Marshal position requires standing for long periods, extensive walking, stair use, and comfort working around horses in large crowd venues. Candidates must work a Wednesday–Sunday racing schedule and handle high-pressure emergency situations with quick judgment and initiative. The role involves exposure to fire hazards and emergency incidents, requiring physical stamina, attention to safety, and frequent interaction with patrons, staff, and emergency personnel.
