Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a Manager, Programs and Production to join our expanding Technology Training team and help New Yorkers improve their digital literacy through community-based education. NYPL offers technology classes, both online and in-person, at more than 80 libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Topics include MS Office, Internet basics, coding languages, graphic design, 3D printing, audio production, video production, podcasting, and more.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Manager will lead, develop, and coach a diverse group of technology professionals while supporting strategic initiatives and new educational offerings. In addition, this Manager will apply expertise in audiovisual technology to oversee the technical execution of large-scale events and educational initiatives for the Technology Training Programs department.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:


Own:
  • The management of NYPL’s recording studio, including technical oversight of NYPL’s recording studio and audiovisual educational programming
  • Event production
Teach:
  • Adult learners attending technology training classes
  • Best practices, ensuring staff have the hard and soft skills required to provide successful tech education programs
  • Staff event planning lifecycle with an emphasis on the technical and audiovisual aspects of large-scale event production
Learn:
  • New and emerging technologies to be incorporated into the management of projects and the classroom setting
Improve:
  • Patrons’ learning experience and digital literacy
  • The expansion of NYPL’s technology education programs with branch-based learning opportunities
  • The relevance of educational offerings by initiating industry partnerships and securing high-profile talent for programs
Some expectations for this role are that within:


1 month, this person will:
  • Visit branches, interact with stakeholders including Library Managers, instructors, and volunteers and create goals with their manager
  • Become knowledgeable about technology education programs, services, and objectives, and how they support NYPL’s organizational goals
  • Become familiar with the technical and production needs of the department, media center, and recording studios
3 months, this person will:
  • Contribute to departmental projects and events, provide tech classes as needed
  • Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to identify gaps in service and present solutions
  • Cultivate a system of support for technology training staff and volunteers
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Onboard and mentor new staff and volunteers
  • Consult on technical purchases and initiate outreach with potential partners or organizations
  • Execute new, innovative initiatives to promote technology training and expand TechConnect’s footprint within the organization and NYC as whole
Responsibilities
  • Manage daily aspects of the Technology Training Program as determined by the Associate Director
  • Spearhead new, innovative AV educational programs and opportunities to expand the reach of technology programming throughout NYPL’s branches
  • Ensure that AV technical needs are met for Technology Training Program’s large-scale events, Media Center and recording studio spaces, and program initiatives
  • Guide staff through professional production workflows, including booking talent, creating documentation, and building and managing internal and external relationships
  • Conduct instructor-led tech classes
  • Survey adult learners to evaluate the impact of programs
  • Coordinate retention strategies for volunteers and studio users
  • Provide key performance indicator (KPI) reports quarterly
  • Assist with budget management
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of additional related work experience
Required Experience
  • 5 years of experience supervising educational or technical programs
Required Skills
  • Strong proficiency with software management and operation on Mac and PC platforms
  • Ability to learn new and emerging technologies quickly
  • Experience with audiovisual technology and workflows, including: studio recording, live sound recording, multicamera video recording, AV signal routing, and audiovisual post-production
  • Ability to work efficiently with other NYPL departments and external vendors or partners, both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, understand their needs, and commit to diversity and inclusion best practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism at all times
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise up to 6 staff members
  • Promote the professional development of technology staff by offering support and coaching to retain talent
  • Manage the schedules of direct reports
  • Lead or assist the recruitment and hiring process for vacancies on the team
