Overview
Founded in 1925, named a National Historic Landmark in 2017, and approaching two landmark centennials in 2025 and 2026, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is one of the world's leading cultural institutions devoted to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of materials focused on the African Diaspora. A research library of The New York Public Library, the Schomburg Center offers an array of education programs and initiatives centered on the history and culture of the African Diaspora and focused on lifelong learning for all ages.

Under the leadership of an Associate Director of Education, Schomburg's Education Department offers year-round educational experiences for all ages, including the Junior Scholars Program (JSP), an established and unique opportunity for middle and senior high school students to explore Black history and culture through an interdisciplinary, creative lens. As a part-time Education Program Assistant, you will work alongside Schomburg Education Department staff and a cohort of Saturday JSP instructors to guide students' intellectual and artistic development using the Schomburg Center's archives to inspire critical thinking and self-expression, and ensure a transformative experience for all students. You will aid in the mentoring of students in a culturally responsive environment, supporting their growth through projects that integrate music, visual art, movement, media, and spoken word to foster inquiry, collaboration, and social action.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Coordinator of the Junior Scholars Program, the part-time Education Program Assistant, Schomburg will:

  • Provide organizational support to the Junior Scholar Program weekly on Saturdays from 9am to 3pm, from October to May

  • Attend and take notes of weekly staff meetings on Saturdays from 3:00 - 4:30 pm

  • Work with the Education Department staff and program Coordinator during the week on an agreed upon schedule to fill various organizational tasks

  • Be responsible for classroom copies and downloads, monitor the supply and orders of student snacks and materials, prepare Saturday morning supply carts including laptops and attendance logins

  • Perform additional administrative tasks as assigned by the program Coordinator and JSP Lead Instructors

  • Support and work alongside department staff, volunteers, and program instructors

  • Serve as an adult mentor and assistant to the Junior Scholars on-site

  • Provide classroom assistance and occasional supervision in the absence of a teacher

  • Submit weekly JSP data reports on attendance

  • Engage in recruitment, tour, and other educational initiatives as needed

  • Assist in organizing educational field trips to local NYC destinations and on-site workshops and Education Department events



Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
High school diploma and some college
Required Experience

  • 1-2 years experience in youth development, coaching or mentorship, arts/museum education, preferably with middle and high school students

  • Experience with positive and inclusive youth development

  • Experience motivating students, or others to overcome barriers and achieve ambitious goals


Required Skills

  • Strong organizational skills, punctuality, and reliability

  • Experience in data collection and basic computer skills


Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
May provide occasional support of Junior Scholars Program participants
