Community Teaching Artist, Ford Learning Center
Reports To: Manager, Community and Access Programs
Department: Community Programs and Partnerships Department, Learning and Engagement Division
JOB PURPOSE:
To facilitate and teach workshops to community groups that have historically encountered barriers to accessing and engaging with art and the museum. These workshops are held morning, afternoon, and evening both onsite at the museum and offsite in community centers around the Kansas City area.
This position provides free experiences looking at, making, and responding to art for learners of all ages whose communities may not have art programs readily available. By cultivating partnerships with local organizations, the Community Teaching Artist strengthens connections between the Nelson-Atkins and communities that may not visit the museum due to financial or cultural barriers.
Key Accountabilities/Essential Functions
Lesson Plan Development: Develop lesson plans that are age and ability appropriate based on museum collections and/or exhibitions and meet the needs of the programs. Lesson plans have foundations in universal design, culturally responsive teaching, and anti-racist principles.
Teaching: Establish an interactive learning environment for diverse students at the museum or off-site that fosters creativity and meets the needs of the programs. Establish an interactive learning environment for diverse Community Partner participants both offsite and ta the museum that fosters creativity and encourages museum visits. Model creative habits that encourage process over product and responds to the personal motivations and curiosities of participation.
Effectively Manage Classroom: Ensure that learners of all backgrounds and abilities are treated with respect and sensitivity to their instructional needs. Provide inclusive and equitable learning opportunities in various environments for in-person and virtual workshops.
Build Relationships: Interact positively and cooperatively with Community Partners and colleagues and provide a consistent presence in Community Programs workshops.
Administrative Support: Maintain and reorder supply inventory for workshops and programs. Track supply expenses and update monthly purchase card information. Review staff schedules and maintain open lines of communication between FLC and Administration. Help collect program attendance and evaluations for workshops. Attend offsite resource fairs to promote museum programs. Function as an access worker to promote resources and services for Community Partners.
Supervision: Supervise and work with Studio Program Assistants and museum volunteers to ensure that assembling materials; set up, clean up and any tasks needed to efficiently maintain the classroom are accomplished.
Outreach Programming Assistance: A willingness to travel to offsite locations for workshops with partnering organizations.
Professional Development: Stay current on the best teaching and museum practices through presentations and interactions with staff.
Other: Completes all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the organization.

Working Conditions/Physical requirements Working conditions are typically that of an office environment. Works primarily at a desk, uses a PC/ Perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions. The ability to attend on-site meetings/events within the museum and museum properties. Perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.
Hours/Travel Expectations
Monday to Friday Workweek. May occasionally work nights, weekends, and holidays to complete work assignments and/or attend work-related events/programs.
50% of Travel Required for offsite workshops and programs

- Bachelor’s degree in fine art, Art Education or related field, or teaching certification preferred.
- Previous or current experience as a classroom instructor. Working successfully with groups of learners from diverse backgrounds and varied abilities.
- Knowledge of best practices in accessibility and universal design.
