POSITION TITLE: Certified High School History Teacher

ORGANIZATION/LOCATION: The Monroe School, Inc.

REPORTS TO: The Head of School

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a full-time special education/content area teaching position that will be responsible for providing instruction to students with special needs in designated middle or high school.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Provide instruction and case management services for students with special needs (i.e. SLD, OHI, ADHD, ED, MD, ID, SLI);

Implement “best practice” strategies in the classroom while recognizing individual learning styles and needs;

Provide accommodations and modifications to materials and instruction to meet students’ needs per the curriculum (i.e. Common Core Standards);

Follow through on behavioral strategies and interventions that are driven by the student’s IEP and/or the Functional Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan;

Utilize the SEDS system in planning for instruction and in the development of the IEP;

Provides training and work assignments to the classroom instructional support staff (i.e. Paraprofessional, Dedicated Assistants).

Participate in professional development relative to special education in general to various disabilities and behavioral disorders specifically; and

Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Have a minimal of 2 years teaching experience as a full teacher or substitute.

Demonstrated ability to provide differentiated instructional techniques that inspire, motivate and meet the individual educational needs of all students;

Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture an atmosphere and educational environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students;

Possesses the personal qualities of being resourceful, resilient and collaborative;

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of strategies in monitoring and evaluating student performance and developing and implementing plans to improve student performance;

Demonstrated ability in integrating technology into curriculum;

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, office staff and other members of the school community;

Working knowledge of and the ability to apply principles and methods of developing an instructional and behavioral management system;

Working knowledge of behavior management techniques and interventions such as positive reinforcement, token economy, contracting and time-out;

Experience with students that exhibit challenging behaviors;

Background knowledge of childhood growth and development patterns;

Ability to work as a part of a team;

Experience in working in a contained special education classroom setting as well as in the inclusive environment; and the ability to teach all content areas required for 6th through 8th grades.

Familiarity with “best practices” in the field of Specific Learning Disabilities and Behavioral Disorders in relation to services, methodologies, communication systems, data collection, etc.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university; Special Education teaching experience having taught students with academic, social, and emotional behavioral difficulties.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Holds or is eligible for a District of Columbia Public Schools Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment; eligibility for the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) teacher certification in special education and/or the content area of instruction.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
