Summary:
Reports to Director of Facilities Management. Provides leadership and technical advice for Environment of Care related matters in order to maintain a safe environment.
Responsibilities:
Coordinates and manages risk assessment and risk reduction activities in the physical environment. Collects deficiency information and disseminates summaries of findings actions and results to leadership. These programs include Safety Management Security Management Emergency Management Fire Safety Utilities Management Medical Equipment Management and Hazardous Materials/Waste Management.
Directly responsible for Safety Management Emergency Management and Hazardous Materials/Waste Management. Coordinates the annual evaluation of all programs in order to assess their effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. This is accomplished in a collaborative effort with the Environment of Care (EOC) Committee.
Implements and coordinates safety management programs as regulated by The Joint Commission (THC) the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) etc. for a safe environment for employees patients and visitors in accordance with applicable standards and regulations. Intervenes when environmental conditions immediately threaten life or health or threaten to damage equipment or buildings. Works with departments to establish departmental safety policies and serves as a technical resource on all safety related matters. Conducts hazard surveillance tours semi-annually for patient care areas and on an annual basis for all other areas. Follows up on identified or reported safety problems concerns or recommendations.
The Environment of Care Coordinator serves as chairperson for the Environment of Care Committee thereby determining agendas preparing for and chairing meetings and recording and distributing minutes. Risk reduction initiatives are developed implemented and evaluated on a continuing basis. As the secretary for the hospital's Emergency Management Committee the Environment of Care Coordinator prepares the minutes/ agendas and facilitates the meetings. Together with the committee the Environment of Care Coordinator organizes the required drills. The Environment of Care Coordinator is also a member of the Brown University Health Recombinant DNA Committee Biohazards Laboratory Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee. Generates the quarterly Environment of Care Committee report to Leadership.
Serves as the Chemical Hygiene officer.
Responsible for the safety portion of The Miriam Hospitals new employee orientation. Conducts safety-training sessions as requested.
Responds to complaints of hazards odors indoor air quality hazardous chemical spills. Maintains the chemical exposure-monitoring program. Investigates opportunities to minimize the amount of hazardous waste generated..
Coordinates the implementation of new safety regulations. Acts as the liaison with all regulatory agencies as they relate to environmental safety. Available for consultation or assistance with Brown University Health affiliates.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE
Requires bachelor degree in Industrial Hygiene Safety Engineering or Environmental Health. or equivalent experience.
Professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate must also have a minimum of five years of progressive professional experience in safety and or plant operations healthcare experience is preferred.
Computer skills with a working knowledge of spreadsheet programs.
Current knowledge of OSHA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) RIDOH the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and TJC requirements required.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Duties will bring into contact with all levels of hospital staff patients visitors and with representatives of outside agencies. Ability to chair meetings and conduct educational sessions.
