Position Title: Senior Manager / AVP, Application Development & Automation
Reports To: Chief Technology Officer
Location: Bethesda, MD (Hybrid β 4 days onsite)
π― Role Summary
We are in an exciting phase of digital transformation, expanding our capabilities in low-code workflow automation and enterprise application development.
The Senior Manager / AVP, Application Development & Automation will lead the growth and maturity of our AppDev practice β overseeing both internal developers and outsourced teams. This leader will drive the design and delivery of solutions using Appian, .NET, Power Platform, and Azure, while implementing a structured SDLC and Agile framework that enhances delivery consistency, quality, and business alignment.
This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys building from the ground up β setting standards, defining architecture, and shaping the engineering culture. The role works closely with the Product Management, Business Systems, Enterprise Architecture, and Data & Analytics teams, ensuring cross-domain collaboration and end-to-end solution alignment.
βοΈ Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Delivery
- Lead and mentor a small internal team (2β3 FTEs) and manage the outsourced Appian development team (Xebia).
- Oversee delivery of applications and workflow solutions across Appian, .NET, Power Platform, and Azure.
- Establish and institutionalize a Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile delivery practices across all projects.
- Implement release management, sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and performance metrics for predictability and transparency.
- Partner with the CTO to establish standards, processes, and tools to improve the design-to-deploy lifecycle across AppDev projects.
Solution Design, Architecture & Integration
- Collaborate with business and technical teams to design scalable, secure, and efficient solutions.
- Establish an application architecture that aligns with our broader enterprise and data architecture standards.
- Work with Product Management to translate business requirements into actionable technical designs and intuitive front-end user experiences.
- Provide technical leadership and oversight in UI/UX design, front-end interfaces, and integration between multiple applications.
- Partner with the Business Systems, Enterprise Architecture, and Data Management & Analytics teams to ensure cohesive, integrated solution design.
- Drive adoption of modern DevOps, CI/CD, and code management practices.
Practice Building & Governance
- Partner with the CTO to build and mature the Application Development and Automation practice β including people, processes, tools, and standards.
- Develop Appian and low-code governance frameworks, covering environment management, version control, testing, and design standards.
- Define and track delivery KPIs, quality standards, and team performance measures.
- Manage vendor relationships and ensure effective capacity and quality across internal and external teams.
Business Partnership
- Serve as the primary liaison between AppDev and business leaders, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
- Participate in solution ideation sessions with Product Management and Operations teams to identify automation and efficiency opportunities.
- Communicate progress, risks, and recommendations effectively to leadership.
Qualifications
- 10 years in Application Development, with at least 3β5 years leading development or automation teams.
Industry Background
- Experience in financial services (banking, lending, investment, or other regulated sectors).
Technical Expertise
- Strong knowledge of Appian (or similar BPMS), .NET, Power Platform, Azure Cloud, API integrations, and UI/UX design principles.
Architecture
- Proven experience establishing application architectures and integrating multiple enterprise applications.
Delivery Frameworks
- Proven experience establishing and managing SDLC processes and Agile delivery models.
Leadership
- Demonstrated ability to lead mixed teams (FTEs and vendors), mentor developers, and influence without heavy hierarchy.
Communication
- Exceptional written and verbal communication; able to simplify technical topics for business stakeholders.

Salary : $175,000 - $195,000
