Position Summary
The Structural Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all field operations related to structural construction on heavy civil infrastructure projects. This includes overseeing structural bridge construction, retaining walls, foundations, cast-in-place concrete, structural steel erection, precast concrete installation, and other complex structural elements.
The Structural Superintendent ensures work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications while maintaining the highest standards of quality, production, and safety. This individual provides leadership to field crews, foremen, subcontractors, and vendors while working closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, owners, and inspectors to successfully deliver complex structural construction projects.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and direct all structural construction activities in coordination with the Project Manager.
- Lead field operations for structural concrete, structural steel, bridge components, retaining walls, foundations, drilled shafts, pile foundations, and other heavy civil structural work.
- Supervise field personnel, foremen, subcontractors, and equipment to ensure safe and efficient project execution.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, including daily work plans and three-week look-ahead schedules.
- Monitor labor productivity, equipment utilization, production quantities, and overall project performance.
- Review and approve daily reports, labor time sheets, equipment reports, and installed quantities.
- Coordinate material deliveries, subcontractor activities, inspections, testing, and quality control.
- Identify schedule impacts, field conflicts, changed conditions, and additional work opportunities, communicating them promptly to the Project Manager and Project Engineer.
- Review monthly cost reports and assist in managing project budgets by controlling labor, equipment, and material costs.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with contract documents, project specifications, company standards, and applicable regulations.
- Enforce all company safety policies and OSHA requirements while promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Conduct daily safety huddles, stretching exercises, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and weekly toolbox talks.
- Develop material handling and installation plans with field leadership.
- Maintain strong working relationships with owners, engineers, subcontractors, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
- Mentor and develop Foremen and field personnel through coaching, training, and performance management.
- Prepare weekly accountability reports and regularly communicate project status to the General Superintendent and Project Management team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred, but not required.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience managing structural construction on heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience supervising projects involving:
- Structural bridge construction
- Cast-in-place concrete
- Structural steel erection
- Precast concrete installation
- Foundations, drilled shafts, piles, footings, and abutments
- Retaining walls and other structural concrete systems
- Strong knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, scheduling, quality control, and production management.
- Experience managing multiple crews, subcontractors, and self-performed work.
- OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documents.
- Experience working on DOT, municipal, or other public infrastructure projects preferred.
