The Menschen is a startup *nonprofit digital newspaper written by individuals experiencing homelessness in the Pittsburgh area who are paid for their work. Our mission is to provide creative opportunities, amplify underrepresented voices, and create a platform centered on dignity, humanity, and authentic storytelling.
We are currently seeking a passionate Volunteer Grant Writer to help us secure funding during our launch phase. This role is ideal for someone interested in nonprofit development, journalism, social justice, community outreach, or building grant-writing experience with a grassroots organization from the ground up.
This is currently a volunteer, payment-deferred startup position during The Menschen’s early development phase. As funding is secured, the organization intends to prioritize future compensation and back pay for early core team members when financially feasible.
- Research grant opportunities relevant to journalism, homelessness, arts, community development, and social justice
- Assist in drafting grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and funding applications
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Passion for community advocacy and ethical storytelling
- Previous grant writing experience preferred but not required
- Experience with nonprofits, journalism, fundraising, or social services is a plus
- Flexible remote volunteer position
