What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facilities Maintenance Technician position at The Meadows Frozen Custard of Latrobe/ Latrobe...?
This is a hands-on, multi-skilled role where you will be the primary (and often only) person responsible for maintaining and repairing our entire facility. You’ll handle a wide variety of tasks across technical trades, general upkeep, and logistics to ensure the restaurant operates safely, efficiently, and without downtime. This position requires independence, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize and manage your own workload in a dynamic food service environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections on all facility systems and equipment to identify issues early and prevent breakdowns.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair commercial kitchen equipment (e.g., ice cream machines/freezers, soft-serve dispensers, refrigeration units, coffee/espresso machines, blenders, ovens, display cases, and other food prep gear).
- Maintain and repair HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) to ensure comfortable temperatures for customers and proper operation of cooling equipment critical for ice cream storage.
- Handle electrical repairs and maintenance (e.g., lighting, outlets, ballast replacements, minor wiring issues – within scope of experience and certifications).
- Perform plumbing tasks (e.g., fixing leaks, unclogging drains, maintaining sinks, ice machines, and water lines).
- Conduct janitorial and cleaning duties as needed (deep cleaning of equipment, floors, restrooms, spills, and general facility upkeep to maintain hygiene standards and a welcoming atmosphere).
- Manage shipping/receiving operations: Receive, inspect, and store deliveries of supplies, parts, and inventory; track stock levels for maintenance items; coordinate with vendors for parts orders.
- Oversee general property maintenance (e.g., minor carpentry, painting, drywall/patch repairs, door/hardware fixes, exterior checks, snow/ice removal if applicable, and ensuring compliance with health/safety regulations).
- Respond promptly to urgent issues reported by staff or observed during shifts (e.g., equipment failures during peak hours).
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, work orders, and inventory.
- Ensure all work complies with food safety standards, health codes, and workplace safety regulations.
- Collaborate with the management team on larger projects, vendor coordination, or equipment upgrades.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proven experience (2 years preferred) in facilities maintenance, preferably in a restaurant, cafe, food service, or commercial kitchen setting.
- Strong hands-on skills in commercial kitchen equipment repair (especially refrigeration, ice cream/soft-serve machines, and coffee equipment – a big plus).
- Solid knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems (certifications such as EPA 608 for refrigeration, electrical/plumbing tickets, or equivalent experience highly valued).
- Comfortable with janitorial tasks and maintaining high cleanliness standards in a food environment.
- Experience with shipping/receiving or inventory management is an asset.
- Ability to work independently as the sole maintenance person – self-motivated, reliable, and proactive.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (for parts runs if needed).
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and ordering.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in tight spaces, and perform tasks in varying temperatures (coolers/freezers to hot kitchen areas).
