Director of Construction – Long Island City, NY
The McCloud Group (TMG) is a Construction Management (CM) firm founded in 2002, specializing in the construction and renovation of K-12 educational, college university, municipal, cultural, residential, and healthcare construction projects for public sector governmental agencies. TMG serves as the owner’s representative and advocate through all phases of a project and under a variety of delivery methods. Active primarily in the Northeast Region, where the company was formed, TMG spent the last 21 years building a diverse project portfolio that includes work in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
Summary
The Director of Construction oversees all aspects of construction projects, from planning and budgeting to coordination of workers and equipment. The Director of Construction works closely with the project manager, architects, and engineers to ensure that the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the specifications set forth in the construction contract. The Director of Construction also works to ensure that all safety regulations are followed, and that the construction site is safe for workers. The Director of Construction is not a typical 40-hour week role, you may work longer hours when deadlines are approaching or when problems arise. The Director of Construction must be able to handle stress and be able to make quick decisions to keep the construction project on track. Must be willing to build, manage and develop a team.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee all aspects of construction projects from start to finish, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and quality standards.
- Review project proposals or plans to determine period, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project.
- Confer with supervisory personnel, owners, contractors, or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems.
- Direct on-site production staff to ensure efficient utilization of materials and labor and monitor compliance with building and safety codes and other regulations.
- Inspect or review projects to monitor compliance with building codes, safety regulations, or other ordinances, resolving any deficiencies.
- Investigate damage, accidents, or delays at construction sites, to ensure that proper documentation is created.
- Select, contract, and oversee the work of architects, engineers, and other construction and design professionals.
- Be able to interface with senior level executives in a professional manner.
- Prepare reports pertaining to job status, costs, or progress for management, clients, or others.
- Develop scopes of work and requests for proposals for general contractors
- Negotiate change orders with general contractors to agree on revised timelines or budgets.
- Manage relationships with city inspectors, utility companies, and other agencies or organizations involved in construction projects.
- Coordinate activities of workers engaged in all phases of construction.
Qualifications & Skills
- Must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering/architecture and/or construction related field from an accredited college or university.
- Have a minimum of ten (10) years full-time technical experience in construction or design fields.
- Must have five (5) years minimum managerial experience in all phases of the work.
- Must be able to manage and develop a team.
- Must have six (6) years of supervisory or management capacity such as analysis, technical/questions and analysis of costs.
- Have the ability to manage multiple projects and obtain project’s technical, cost and schedule objectives.
- Consideration will be given to licensed professional engineers and registered architects or candidates with a master’s degree in architecture, engineering or a related field.
