What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Counselor/Assistant Counselor - Seasonal position at The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission?
The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education Division, is currently seeking Summer Camp Counselors to fill positions at Locust Grove Nature Center located in Bethesda, Maryland.
The selected candidates must display excellent customer service and communication skills, be willing to work outside all day, and attain a First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (training classes available) and attend in-house orientation. The positions will run from mid-June to mid-August with a mandatory training at the beginning of June.
Nature Camp Counselor
Candidate will serve as Assistants to the Naturalists for Montgomery County Parks Nature Center camps.?Candidates will adhere to all Youth Camp Standard requirements.? Some duties include assisting campers in the various activities, preparing campfires, accompanying, and monitoring campers on all field trips, maintaining order in and between activities, monitoring campers during breaks and meals, monitoring campers during before and after care, and ensuring the safety of campers at all times.? Must be 18 or older, have an interest in environmental education or the outdoors, be comfortable working with children from ages 4 to 14 years old, and attend and complete all M-NCPPC trainings. Prior experience, education, and/or certifications preferred including Maryland Master Naturalist, Certified Interpretive Guide, etc.
Requirements for Camp Counselors
BA/BS in education or science earned or in progress (Must have HS diploma)
Experience working with children, or one-year minimum leading summer camps
Experience in conducting environmental education lessons
Maryland natural history knowledge
CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
Valid driver’s license
Nature Camp Assistant Counselor
Candidate will serve as Assistants to the Counselors and Naturalists for Montgomery County Parks Nature Center camps.? Candidates will adhere to all Youth Camp Standard requirements.? Some duties include assisting campers in the various activities, preparing campfires, accompanying, and monitoring campers on all field trips, maintaining order in and between activities, monitoring campers during
breaks and meals, monitoring campers during before and after care, and ensuring the safety of campers at all times.? Other duties include assisting with setup, cleanup, preparing supplies, setting up activities, and being available to help make the camp day run smoothly.
Must be 16 or older, have an interest in environmental education or the outdoors, be comfortable working with children from ages 4 to 14 years old, and attend and complete all M-NCPPC trainings. Previous Locust Grove volunteer counselors preferred.
Requirements for Assistant Counselor
Pursuing High School Diploma or associate degree
Experience working with children, or one-year minimum volunteering with summer camps
Maryland natural history knowledge (Environmental science, Envirothon, etc.)
CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
Working Conditions
Summer camps are primarily outside for the entirety of the day with exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
Able to lift 25 lbs.
Able to hike 3 miles at a time
Supplemental Information for both Positions
These positions are seasonal (part-time) and do not include benefits.?
Hours range between 20-40/hours per week through the camp season.
Salaries are based on experience.?
A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.?
This position is subject to pre-employment and random controlled substance and alcohol testing.
