The Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation, Youth and Countywide Sports Division (YCSD) develops, organizes, and supports recreational sports programming for youth and adults across the county. Our programs aim to foster skill development, teamwork, community engagement, and a lifelong love for sports.
The sports unit of YCSD is seeking a softball Instructor to lead, support and enhance youth softball programming at various athletic fields throughout the county who will assist with tournaments and sporting events at various schools and fields throughout the county. The softball Instructor will deliver high-quality instruction, ensure player safety, and maintain a positive, engaging environment for participants of all ages and skill levels.

Instruction & Player Development
Lead softball training sessions focused on fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, base running and game strategy. Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of various age groups and skill levels. Provide constructive feedback and ensure a supportive, encouraging learning environment. Serve as a role model who promotes sportsmanship, teamwork and confidence.
Serve as the on-site lead during league practices, games and events Monitor game operations to ensure rules are followed and schedules run on time. Support volunteer coaches and umpires by answering questions and providing guidance as needed. Maintain a positive and professional presence with players, coaches, officials, parents and spectators. Record attendance, program progress and any issues that occur during practices or games Assist with inventory and distribution of equipment supplies
Provide helpful, courteous support to families and patrons Communicate updates about schedule changes, program expectations and field conditions
High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age. Candidates must have a valid Class “C” or “D” driver’s license; a minimum of two years of driving experience; and the ability to attain the Commission’s defensive driving certification. Must be comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in varying weather conditions. Ability to stand, sit, or move for extended periods. Physically able to demonstrate softball skills, move around the field and lift equipment up to 25 lbs. Previous experience coaching or instructing softball
Community CPR and First Aid certifications are desirable. Experience working with youth, recreation programs, or sport leagues
Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to leads groups, support volunteers and resolve on site issues calmly Effective organizational skills to help manage a league environment Ability to promote a positive, inclusive and safe athletic experience
The position will work a variety of shifts Seasonal, part time schedule Evening and weekend hours required during league seasons and special events.
Indoors and outdoors, sometimes during varying weather conditions.
Employment is contingent upon a favorable background check. Work locations are in various locations countywide. This position is seasonal/part-time and does not include a benefits package. May be subject to medical, drug, and alcohol testing.
