The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is a bi-county agency servicing both Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The park systems are managed in both counties and in Prince George’s County; the public’s recreation programs are developed and maintained.

In this role, you’ll work on a team completing major trail projects, perform maintenance and repairs on stormwater structures, and help to complete large scale grading and construction project renovations all while having a positive impact on our county’s climate resilience.

This position falls within the Facility Services Division (FSD), the largest Division within the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. We provide high-quality maintenance and support services for all parks and recreation facilities. FSD has six (6) major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Heavy Equipment, Sustainability, Aquatic Maintenance) and the Administrative section.
The Trails / Roads and Grounds Principal Park/Fac Maintenance Worker-CDL will join the Critical Projects Team within the Facility Services Division. The successful candidate will work under direct supervision performing a wide range of duties related to trail maintenance and upgrades, stormwater Best Management Practices, and many other ongoing projects under heavy equipment. This work is highly collaborative in nature and requires an effective team player.- Operates trucks, truck and trailer combinations, front-end loader, skid steer, excavator, dump trucks with plows, and tank trucks. Operates complex equipment and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating requiring a CDL. Patches and resurfaces asphalt roads and trails, removes snow, and hauls materials and equipment. Performs routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Utilizes specific personal protection equipment; ensures safeguards are in place.
- Ensures safety of work areas and sites.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs to park trails both paved and natural surfaces.
- Under direct supervision, participates on projects team is tasked with, grading for ball fields, construction sites, stormwater best maintenance practices, and other specialized projects within the parks and recreation portfolio.
- Conducts maintenance and repairs on stormwater structures such as dry ponds, submerged gravel wetlands, swales, bioretention, wet ponds, and rain gardens.
- Under direct supervision, work on required special events related to FSD bandwagon requests.
- Maintains knowledge of new operation practices, equipment, and technology related to job duties through: certification, training, and continuing education programs; attendance at professional seminars and conferences; and informal exchanges of professional information.
Important Worker Characteristics
A. Considerable knowledge of: (1) equipment operation; (2) industry best practices; (3) grading; (4) Commission activities, organization, policies, procedures*; (5) trail maintenance; and (6) regulatory compliance including Federal, State and Local governments.
B. Skill in the operation of heavy equipment including front end loaders, skid steers, excavators, tank trucks, dozers, dump trucks, snowplows, etc.
C. Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
D. Ability to: (1) follow directions; (2) analyze and evaluate maps and architectural/engineering drawings; (3) interpret technical reports and correspondence; (4) effectively communicate with teammates and supervisor (5) work efficiently and effectively; and (6) provide courteous service.
- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
- Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.

Working Conditions
The selected candidate for this position will primarily work outside and will be exposed to all types of weather. Working on weekends, evenings, and holidays may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects. This position will be required to report during snow/weather events.
