The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education Division, is currently seeking a Summer Camp Assistant Counselor to fill a position at Meadowside Nature Center located in Derwood, MD.
The selected candidates must display excellent customer service and communication skills, be willing to work outside all day, and attend in-house orientation. The positions will run from June to mid-August with a mandatory training on Saturday June 7th.
Nature Camp Assistant Counselor at Meadowside Nature Center $16.50/hour
Candidate will serve as Assistants to the Naturalists for Montgomery County Parks Nature Center camps. Candidates will adhere to all Youth Camp Standard requirements. Some duties include assisting campers in various activities, preparing campfires, accompanying, and monitoring campers on all field trips, maintaining order in and between activities, monitoring campers during breaks and meals, and ensuring the safety of campers at all times. Other duties include assisting with setup, cleanup, preparing supplies, setting up activities, and being available to help make the camp day run smoothly.
Must be 16 or older, have an interest in environmental education or the outdoors, be comfortable working with children from ages 4 to 14 years old, and attend and complete all M-NCPPC trainings. Previous Meadowside volunteer counselors preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
Pursuing High School Diploma or Associate’s degree
Experience working with children, or one-year minimum volunteering with summer camps
Some Maryland natural history knowledge
Comfort around reptile, amphibian, raptor animal ambassadors
Comfort around insects and other animals that maybe encountered in nature.
CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
Supplemental Information
This position is seasonal (part-time) and does not include benefits.
Hours range between 20-40/hours per camp week (dependent on half-day or full-day camp schedule)
A complete background investigation and fingerprinting will be completed prior to hire.
This position is subject to random drug screenings.
Working Conditions
Summer camps are primarily outside for the entirety of the day with exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
Able to lift 25 lbs.
Able to hike 3 miles at a time
