Purpose:

The Mariners’ Museum sits in an urban oasis – the 550-acre park is now home to the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake and the Noland Trail – a five-mile shoreline trail with 14 bridges. Inside, the museum boasts 90,000 square feet of galleries, exhibits, and community spaces. Our Facilities Department is dedicated to delivering top-tier service and comprehensive facility support to maintain the Museum’s buildings, infrastructure, and surrounding property. The department’s skilled technical staff ensure the reliable operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Museum’s mechanical, electrical, and physical infrastructure, preserving our world-class collection with secure and sound power, water, HVAC, fire protection, and structural systems.


We’re looking to add a Facilities Trades Technician to our team! This hands-on role is ideal for candidates interested in building maintenance within a dynamic museum campus environment. We welcome entry-level applicants with strong mechanical aptitude and also encourage experienced facilities technicians to apply. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, this role provides cross-functional support to our Structural Technician, Electrical Systems Supervisor, and Environmental Systems Technician. The Facilities Trades Technician assists with preventive maintenance and minor repairs across multiple building systems, including HVAC support components, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and general building infrastructure.

The Facilities Trades Technician is a full-time (40 hours a week), hourly, non-exempt position that pays $18/hr - $22/hr (based on qualifications, certifications, and experience). We offer really great benefits, including:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Multi-Trade Maintenance Support -

Assist the Electrical Systems Supervisor with lighting repairs, device replacement, minor wiring tasks, and conduit installation within scope and supervision.

Support the Structural Technician with carpentry, drywall repair, painting, door hardware installation, ceiling systems, and general building repairs.

Assist the Environmental Systems Technician with HVAC preventive maintenance and mechanical inspections.

Perform basic plumbing repairs including fixture replacement and valve servicing.

Preventive Maintenance & Work Order Execution -

Execute assigned preventive maintenance tasks through the CMMS.

Respond to corrective maintenance work orders in a timely and professional manner.

Accurately document work performed, materials used, and findings on all work orders.

Exhibit, Collections & Operational Support -

Support environmental stability within exhibit and collections areas.

Assist with temporary infrastructure needs for programs and events.

Maintain professional standards in all public-facing spaces.

General Facilities Support -

Assist with minor renovation and improvement projects.

Support material handling, equipment movement, and staging activities.

Coordinate with vendors and contractors under direction of Facilities leadership.

Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.

Safety & Compliance -

Adhere to OSHA regulations and TMMP safety policies.

Participate in required safety training.

Follow lockout/tagout procedures under direction of qualified personnel.

Utilize personal protective equipment appropriately.

Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.

Work Environment -

Work performed indoors and outdoors across a large campus environment.

Exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, mechanical spaces, and construction areas.

Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting.

Work in climate-controlled museum spaces requiring awareness of environmental sensitivity and collections protection standards.

Ability to work safely at heights and in confined spaces.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work from ladders and lifts.



Required Qualifications:



High School Diploma or GED.

Experience in facilities maintenance, building trades, construction, or related technical field (entry-level candidates with relevant training will be considered).

Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate hand and power tools.

Ability to read and interpret technical instructions and equipment manuals.

Valid driver’s license.

Capable of maintaining accurate daily time records.

Team-oriented mindset, with a willingness to assist other departments and staff.

Commitment to providing excellent internal customer service and fostering professional relationships with staff, visitors, and contractors.

Strict adherence to Mariners’ Museum and Park policies regarding the handling of artifacts and exhibits.

Dedication to following all company procedures and safety regulations, including practical adherence to OSHA standards for each task.

Willingness to adhere to prescribed dress codes and appearance standards


Preferred Qualifications:


3 years facilities or skilled trades experience

Trade certification or formal technical training (electrical, HVAC, carpentry, or related field).

Experience working in museums, archives, or preservation-focused facilities

Knowledge of ASHRAE and AAM standards for artifact preservation


Conditions of Employment:

Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen prior to employment

Valid State of Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles Vehicle Operator’s license with a good DMV record required. Including the stipulation about providing a DMV report and agreeing to periodic updates, as failure to meet these requirements can impact employment eligibility.
