Position Summary
MSG is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Soils and Concrete Field Technician with 1 - 3 years of experience to join our Geoenvironmental Services team in Canton, Michigan. In this role, you will perform construction materials testing and inspection services for commercial, industrial, transportation, and municipal projects. You will collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to document compliance with project specifications and applicable standards while building valuable field experience and advancing your technical skills.


Key Responsibilities

• Perform field observations, testing, and inspections of soils, aggregates, concrete, and other construction materials
• Conduct field density testing of soils and aggregates using nuclear density gauges and other approved testing methods
• Monitor concrete placement activities and perform sampling, slump, air-content, and temperature testing, including casting concrete test cylinders
• Observe and document earthwork operations, including subgrade preparation, excavation, backfilling, and compaction
• Prepare accurate, timely field reports that document test locations, elevations or lifts, weather conditions, quantities, contractor activities, observations, test results, deficiencies, and photographs, as applicable.
• Promptly communicate inspection findings, failing test results, and observed deviations to contractors, project managers, and engineering staff while avoiding direction of the contractor’s means, methods, sequences, or safety programs
• Verify that observed construction activities conform to project plans, specifications, and applicable industry standards
• Safely operate hand tools and testing equipment while completing hands-on assignments in active construction environments
• Confirm that required equipment checks and calibrations are current before use, and maintain testing equipment in accordance with established procedures.
• Properly label, protect, transport, and deliver samples and specimens to the laboratory while maintaining required chain-of-custody documentation
• Secure, transport, operate, and document nuclear density gauges, concrete testing equipment, and specimens in accordance with company procedures, required training, and applicable regulatory requirements
• Perform field testing and inspections in changing weather conditions and active construction environments
• Follow company and project-specific safety procedures, exercise stop-work authority as appropriate, and promptly escalate unsafe conditions through established reporting protocols.
• Use electronic systems to manage scheduling, time entry, field reporting, and photographic documentation
• Provide field support for geotechnical and environmental projects, as assigned.
  
  
  
  

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• High school diploma or GED required; an associate degree in civil engineering technology, construction technology, or a related field is preferred
• 1 - 3 years of construction materials testing and inspection experience
• Working knowledge of soils, aggregates, concrete testing, and standard construction practices.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements
• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
• Ability to meet applicable driving-record, background-screening, drug-screening, and other employment requirements in accordance with company policy and applicable law.
• Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic field-reporting systems
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely perform fieldwork on active construction sites.

The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company’s good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
