POSITION TITLE: Academic Success Program (ASP) - Instructor
POSITION SUMMARY: The ASP Instructor works in coordination with the ASP staff and is responsible for instructing eligible students in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies, specifically in preparation for the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam and college or workforce entry, while using up-to-date and sound pedagogical methods appropriate for adult learners.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Uses College and Career Readiness Standards to develop an organized sequence of instruction in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies for the HSE or college preparation and workforce entry based on individual student learning plans.
2. Instructs enrolled ASP students in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies while monitoring progress toward attaining educational goals.
3. Utilizes student interests and experience to provide contextualized learning opportunities in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies.
4. Employs a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of learners, including individualized and group instruction and the integration of technology.
5. Discusses student successes and needs in student staffing and completes progress reports for eligible students if assigned.
6. Collaborates with other instructors to ensure an effective sequence of instruction for all shared students.
7. Track eligible students and prepare them for and administer posttests utilizing the Test of Adult Basic Education.
8. Completes student documentation accurately and reports it in a timely manner following ASP policy guidelines.
9. Employs various techniques to improve student retention and goal attainment in the classroom.
10. Creates a comfortable and motivating environment for adult learners.
11. Provides direction and feedback for paid and volunteer classroom tutors.
12. Makes recommendations for curriculum and program development to the ASP Department Chairperson.
13. Participates in ASP department meetings and professional development activities.
14. Other duties as assigned by the Director or the ASP Department Chairperson.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. BA in Education with additional coursework in Literacy and/or Adult Learning styles preferred.
2. Academic preparation in English, Reading, Computer-Assisted Instruction, and Learning Disabilities preferred.
3. Previous experience instructing adults in a classroom setting in the basic skills areas is preferred.
4. Previous experience working with adults having multiple barriers and/or learning disabilities preferred.
5. Previous experience developing curriculum for Adult Basic Education classes preferred.
6. Content and teaching competence that engage the adult student and focus on student learning are required.
7. The ability to work with students, colleagues, and supervisors in a collaborative and professional manner is required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part-time instructional assignment. Compensation is at the rate of $28-$32 per instructional hour. Monday-Thursday 8:30 AM-3 PM
