About The Leffell School
The Leffell School is a cutting-edge K–12 Jewish independent school serving more than 850 students on two campuses in Westchester County, NY—just 30 minutes north of New York City. We are seeking a detail-oriented and tech-savvy Junior Accountant to join our Business Office beginning February 2026. This is a 100% in-person non-exempt role supporting the school’s daily financial operations.
Position Overview
The Junior Accountant is responsible for supporting day-to-day financial operations, maintaining accurate accounting records, and assisting with monthly close and annual audit activities. This position is ideal for an early-career accounting professional seeking broad exposure to core accounting functions within a nonprofit/educational environment.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Junior Accountant will own the accounts payable process, contribute to general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, journal entries, and compliance-related tasks, while developing a strong foundation in accounting principles and internal controls.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Month-End Support
Prepare and post journal entries with appropriate documentation and approvals
Support the Controller with month-, quarter-, and year-end close processes
Reconciliations & Financial Controls
Perform and assist with account reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation, including bank accounts, credit cards via Bill.com, and balance sheet accounts
Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
Use Excel or Google Sheets to analyze data, and support reporting needs
Participate in improving accounting processes, documentation, and workflows
Accounts Payable & Purchasing Support
Own the accounts payable process through Bill.com, ensuring proper authorization and accurate expense classification
Support purchasing and expense reimbursement processes in accordance with school policies
Audit, Compliance & Reporting Support
Assist with annual audit preparation and respond to auditor requests
Execute 1099 preparation and filing
Help maintain organized financial records to support internal controls and compliance
Required Qualifications & Mindset
Associate’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
1–3 years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable, or finance operations preferred
Experience using cloud-based accounting and financial systems (Bill.com experience a plus)
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and/or Google Workspace, specifically Google Sheets (formulas, sorting, lookups)
Strong attention to detail, organized, commitment to financial accuracy, and eager to learn
Interest in gaining broad exposure to general accounting functions and helping evolve processes
Compensation and Benefits:
• Pay Range: $60,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience to be paid at an hourly rate.
• Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA, Dependent Care FSA, 403b, Paid Vacation, Personal/Sick Days and Holidays.
