About the Position
The Salvation Army in Mount Vernon is seeking caring, energetic, and dependable Summer Day Camp Counselors to help lead our summer program for elementary-aged children.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with kids, leading games and activities, supporting field trips, and helping create a safe, fun, and positive summer camp experience. Summer Day Camp Counselors play an important role in supervising children, encouraging participation, building relationships, and helping each day run smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Summer Day Camp Counselors will:
- Actively supervise children throughout the camp day
- Lead recreation, gym games, outdoor play, and group activities
- Help lead enrichment-based learning activities
- Nurture and care for children during daily camp routines
- Assist with meals, snacks, transitions, activities, and cleanup
- Maintain and monitor snack records, supplies, attendance, and other program needs
- Assist with field trips, including transportation support and active supervision
- Play, interact, and build positive relationships with campers
- Help create a welcoming, safe, structured, and fun camp environment
- Attend required trainings and in-service meetings
- Support and uphold the mission of The Salvation Army
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Corps Officer, Day Camp Director, or program leadership
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Enjoys working with elementary-aged children
- Is patient, dependable, energetic, and encouraging
- Can lead games, group activities, and daily routines
- Communicates well with children, families, and coworkers
- Can actively supervise children in busy indoor, outdoor, and field trip settings
- Is comfortable being playful, silly, engaged, and hands-on with kids
- Can work independently while also being part of a team
- Understands the importance of safety, confidentiality, professionalism, and positive role modeling
- Is willing to complete required childcare-related trainings
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to relate positively to children
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to actively supervise children responsibly
- Willingness to complete required trainings, including First Aid, Communicable Disease, and other childcare-related trainings
Preferred
- Associate degree, two years of college, CDA credential, or coursework in education, childcare, recreation, or a related field
- Prior experience in summer camp, childcare, youth programming, tutoring, recreation, classroom support, or children’s ministry
- Experience leading activities for school-aged children
Work Environment
This position takes place in an active summer camp setting and may include indoor activities, gym games, outdoor play, field trips, meals, crafts, enrichment activities, and group supervision. Candidates should be comfortable being on their feet, interacting with children, playing games, and participating in hands-on activities throughout the day.
