What are the responsibilities and job description for the Attorney sought for established general law practice position at The Law Office of James Steele PLLC?
Looking for an attorney, especially one with interest in appellate law
We are seeking a lawyer to join our firm. It’s a general practice, although each of us has gravitated to the types of cases we prefer. We are especially interested in hiring an attorney who is interested in appellate law. No prior appellate law experience is required, although strong writing and analytical skills are.
Our firm currently employs one of the most capable appellate lawyers in the Commonwealth. As he nears retirement, I’m focused on bringing in an attorney who can learn appellate law from him, and benefit from his vast knowledge and experience.
About our firm
Our firm has four main goals, in no particular order: (1) to provide a good, sustainable place for people to work, (2) to build and maintain a good reputation in the community, (3) to provide a living wage, and (4) to produce quality legal work.
We’ve tried to build an office that’s well-suited to those who like working in small firms, offering a lot of autonomy without the need to manage the administrative side of the practice. The attorneys and staff at the office are good people, and pleasant to work with. Right now, we have a total of six attorneys, with four on site and two working remotely.
Compensation
Our attorneys are paid a modest starting salary of $70k/year (with health insurance and IRA matching options), but with an aggressive bonus structure that pays out half of what the attorney brings in, less their costs. This means that most attorneys start earning a bonus after billing the equivalent of two hours per workday. An attorney with high billables has the ability to earn a lot of money ($250k estimated at 6 billable hours per workday).
Applicants
Both experienced and newly-licensed attorneys are welcome to apply. A newer attorney will greatly benefit from a willingness to learn and try a broad range of practice areas and types of cases. Our more experienced attorneys tend to be able to quickly earn income, focusing on areas they know, especially in the areas of family and criminal law.
