JOB TITLE: School Nurse Administrator (Supervisor role)
- contributes to TRS or IMRF, as applicable
JOB GOAL: Provide supervision and professional development for nurses, educational staff and families. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, district and state board of education policies and procedures. Coordinate staffing needs. Assess students’ health needs, develop and implement nursing care plans and emergency medical plans, and maintain medical records. Consult with families and medical professionals to coordinate student health care.
REPORTS TO: LADSE Executive Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Baccalaureate degree, Master’s degree preferred
- Professional Educator License endorsement as a School Nurse issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is preferred, but open to great candidates
- CPR Instructor Certification preferred
- Illinois Certification as a Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, will get trained if needed
- Prior experience in pediatric, adolescent setting
- Experience with a management of a health office preferred
SKILL SETS:
- Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of current practices in nursing as it relates to state and federal laws and school code
- Experience with students with fragile medical needs (seizures, g-tubes, tracheas, etc.)
- Understanding of vision, hearing and vaccination requirements for school districts
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
GENERAL Program Coordinator Responsibilities - See Standards-Based Job Description for LADSE’s Administrative Team (attached), and:
- Team with LADSE and District Administrators to identify and implement appropriate professional goals.
- Develop and maintain a budget related to assigned programs and related services.
- Demonstrate current understanding of special education rules and regulations, i.e. IDEA, ADA, Section 504, etc.
- Provide technical assistance to LADSE and District staff.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
SPECIFIC Responsibilities of the Coordinator for Nursing Services
- Leadership
- Supervise and evaluate Certified School Nurses, RNs, and LPNs
- Assist in creating and implementing a comprehensive school health program
- Maintain communication with administrators, staff and families to meet the health and safety needs of students
- Work collaboratively with healthcare providers and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues
- Compiles data for statistical purposes
- Develop a medication protocol for safe storing, administration and documentation of medications given at school
- Make recommendations regarding necessary accommodations for students due to a health concern
Nursing Care
- Provide professional nursing assessment and first aid for minor injuries and illness and follow up documentation and communication
- Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation and placement of students into special education and/or 504 plans
- Administer medications and provide individual health interventions per physician orders
- Maintain accurate medical records, including individual cumulative health records, immunizations, and physical exams according to district policy and state of Illinois mandates
- Provide appropriate health related resources, referrals and education
- Follow district policy regarding delinquent physical and immunizations
- Communicate to Cook County Health Department and district administration cases of reportable diseases per requirement of Illinois Department of Public Health
- Provide written emergency plans and health care plans for students when indicated
- Maintain health supplies for building health office
- Coordinate district vision and hearing screenings
Professional Development
- Coordinate and provide in-services to staff on current nursing practices as well as mandated topics such as diabetes and seizure protocols
- Maintain contact with a professional nursing organization and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge and leadership
