The Kinkaid School is seeking a student-centered and innovative Science Teacher, with expertise in physics, chemistry or engineering, to join its Upper School team starting August 2026. The ideal candidate will have a passion for collaboration with colleagues and proven success in connecting the content to students’ innate inquisitiveness and critical thinking skills. Reporting to the Upper School Science Department Chair, the Upper School Science Teacher will be called on to promote high levels of learning in an engaging and effective manner using various teaching methods and curriculum resources. This teacher must embrace and help advance the principles set out in Kinkaid’s core documents: mission and core values, Upper School Educational Philosophy and Portrait of a Teacher

 

The Kinkaid School is a co-educational non-sectarian day school enrolling over 1,480 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the School offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, diverse culture. With an enrollment of about 630, the Upper School fosters a learning environment centered on academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and personal attention. The Upper School faculty enjoys small class sizes and a collegial, collaborative environment centered on intellectual curiosity and continuous professional development.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  • Teach four academic classes in science (physics, chemistry or engineering)
  • Serve as an advisor to ten to fifteen upper school students
  • Work collaboratively within teaching teams to develop unit plans and assessments
  • Serve as a member of the Science Department, attending departmental meetings, developing and updating course curricula, and supporting the work of the department 
  • Participate in the school's STEM Center initiatives such as mentoring student research, participating in STEM symposium, and other STEM activities.
  • Sponsor a club or a student leadership organization
  • Maintain regular office hours starting at 7:40 a.m.
  • Facilitate open, informative, and friendly communications with students and parents both verbally and in writing
  • Participate in Interim Term during the month of January
  • Engage in the school community by attending programs and events outside of department, such as athletic competitions, art events, or all-school community programs
  • Prioritize professional development and remaining current in the field of effective teaching
  • Commitment to model Kinkaid’s mission and four core values (honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness) in interactions with all members of the community 
  • Demonstrate collegiality and high professional standards
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, or engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Experience teaching upper school students with mastery in effectively delivering science content 
  • Enjoyment in teaching students across the entire range of grades (9-12)
  • Core knowledge about the development of upper school age children
